I lost 100 pounds in 6 months on Medifast many years ago - only shakes, no food. You have to be very committed and you should be closely followed by your PCP. I couldn't do this kind of diet again - it's too hard on the body. DH and I were the only ones in the group to go longer than 2 weeks and of course the only ones to lose the weight and finish. Ifyou cheat then it makes it even harder to go back and stick to the shakes. My only regret is a few years later I got sick and all our bad habits and bad take out meals reappeared.
I mixed the shake sometimes with diet soda to mix up the flavors a little, you could also use those sugar free flavoring agents such as Da Vinci.
The thing that DH and I realized (we did it together while I made real meals for my children) was that during the meal while I cooked and the smells were great - we felt we were missing out on not eating. But once the kids finished eating and DH and I had our shake, we didn't miss that fact that we hadn't eaten - you forget 10 seconds after the meal that you were deprived of food.
