I'm one of those people who will try anything once and I'm proud to have tried eating all kinds of weird food. I won't eat insects but you don't see that often on the menu. I have a very short list of foods that I will never try again such as sea cucumber which is no a vegetable but is an animal related to starfish and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_cucumber with no flavor and a very chewy texture YUCK. Another is the injera fermented sour dough pancake that is used as the plate and serving utensil in Ethiopian food - I like their curries but not this sour pancake which is the main part of the meal.
I'm also not crazy about tofu or the mucinous texture of okra when it's stewed.
Now I was raised in a meat and potato kind of home where Chinese and spaghetti was eaten and considered exotic. Now I love to travel and try new foods and then come home and make them for my family.
Are you an adventuresome dinner or do you prefer foods you grew up eating?

Did you just say "fermented" sour dough pancakes??? And I would not be chowing down on no damn sea cucumber creature either!
For the most part I would say that I am NOT an adventuresome diner, I've adapted all of my all American favorites to my plan. That being said, I'm Cajun so some of the stuff we eat might be considered a li'l exotic to some, but normal to me. Like gumbo, my favorite is cooked with alligator and turtle meat. I adore 'spicy' crawfish...you know, sucking heads and pinching tails, but I was surprised to learn in my youth that most people don't even know what that is...imagine that? Another favorite of mine is alligator gar cakes. That's some good eatin' Sha!
As someone who has eaten her share of okra in gumbo all of her life, here's a tip about the okra. After you boil it, let is set for while and all of the slime will rise to the top so you can skim it out. Or if you don't like okra, you can thicken your gumbo with file' and make file' gumbo.
Other than alla that, I'm a pretty moderate eater. Kimmie is the one who is hard to feed. She eats no seafood at all!

You eat alligator and turtle? If I had grown up in NOLA, I wouldn't have been fat 'cuz I hate alla that cajun food. I got fat on mexican food.
I hate fish and seafood and can't believe that people can eat something that smells that bad. I hate pork; I won't eat dark meat chicken or chicken with bones; I hate eggs; I hate butter and mayonnaise; and I just started eating beef for the first time in my life a few years ago. I'm a VERY picky eater (and not ashamed of it...LOL)
BTW, what's a gar?

Mary, thanks for the tip for cooking okra - I may just try that - okra is very low in calories isn't it?
And yes those pancakes are made of teff which is a type of grass and they make the mix then let it sit a few days to ferment so it has this weird sour taste - blech And the worst thing is you have no choice but to eat it if you eat at a very traditional restaurant because they dont have knives and forks and spoons - that's what the pancake is for. Wel I guess you can lick the food off your fingers but I don't think that is polite.
I've been to NO many times and had some wonderful gumbos - best with andouille sausage, crawfish and shrimp IMHO. I've had alligator which to me tastes just like chicken but I found the turtle meat dry although that could have been the way it was prepared. It must have taken some fiddling to make gumbo Atkins friendly to keep the flavor.
Well if Kimmie doesn't eat seafood she is missing out on some wonderful flavors, but she would also be lucky and miss eating that awful sea cucumber animal.
