Keeping your big clothes: What's your opinion?

Yesterday on Oprah, Valerie Bertinelli, who lost 50 pounds on Nutrisystem (I believe) said that she is keeping her fat clothes just in case.  I think it's a mistake.   I've gone up and down over the years and I have never kept my big clothes.  I have one exception, I have held on to a pair of jeans that I had  when I weighed 235 - just to remind me of how far I've come.   For me, I need to get rid of fat clothes as soon as they no longer fit to prevent myself from gaining the weight back.  Any other opinions out there?

I agree with you! It's the whole Mindset that needs to be Changed, their is NO going back! I think I will keep my largest pair of pants as well, the ones that were my everyday comfort pants, now they practically fall off of me! but why hoard, give your clothes to someone who can get good use out of them or sell them on e-bay or donate them to good will, thats my 2 cents!

I totally agree with you!  I kept my really big stuff for about a year, but then realized how silly I was being - I went from a 34 to a 20 (at the time... now an 18, hoping to be a 16 with the little bit more to lose and the LBL I hope to have one day!!) -- I had NINE garbage bags FULL... trust me, I made some folks VERY happy - I gave some away at my support group's clothing exchange, and the rest I listed on FreeCycle and some very needing folks benefitted... I am NOT EVER going back to that size 34 EVER... I kept one just top and one pair of jeans - the ones that I took my "look at me, I fit in ONE leg" photo!!!!

My WW leader said on Saturday, that you should NOT hang onto your old/big clothes, because it gives you an excuse to go back into them. If you don't have bigger clothes in your closet, you know you have to keep working to stay in the small ones you do have! :)

WW told me to not keep mine either, I got rid of most of them, except tops that I didn't mind were baggy. But after surgery and menopause the weight came back and I had to buy more stuff. One thing I haven't done is get rid of the SMALL clothes. Well I may have gotten rid of the 10's since I don't think at 5'8" I should be that thin.   I have stuff from 18 (now) down to 12 - I suspect If I looked at those old ones I could find homes for them too as when I reach my goal this time I will want new ones!

Absolutely - get rid of them.  They represent for me a way to "go back" to that. Like it's okay.

It isn't.

I'm with you.......DUMP THEM!

I've lost 100+ lbs twice before in my life and regained it all and then some.  Both times I had all my BIG clothes to fit back in to.  This time I did it differently, every few months as I shrunk and things got way to big I would give them away.  I've given away more than 40 beautiful business suites and dozens of dresses, tops, pants, etc.  I am saving only one BIG dress, a pair of jeans, a shirt, underpants and a bra.  I'm saving these as reminders of what I NEVER want to go back to.

I've totally changed my relationship with food this time, I workout daily, and now after having plastic surgery I would NEVER NEVER NEVER go back again.

Sorry some of my passion about this spilled out.....
Great topic for discussion!
Thanks
Ruth

Hey Ruth, isn't it amazing how spending alla that money on reconstructive surgery seems to work so well for maintenance?  I feel like I messed up the body that God gave me, so now I can't blow the second chance that my plastic surgeon gave me!

I kept one pair of pants and one top from my heaviest. The rest has all been donated. I've gone through a ton of clothes in the last 3 years but if it means I'm buying smaller sizes each time, I don't mind!

It's interesting how our minds are though. I had 4 piles of clothes all folded neatly and on the extra-bedroom bed for 3 months. I realized I was having a hard time getting rid of the clothes because this set of clothes were all new in the last year. When I first started losing weight I had my old, smaller clothes packed away that I could wear. But last year I finally I had to start buying new clothes, but now those are too big! I finally bagged them up and gave them away this week! It was a little hard, but I went to Fashion Bug and bought a new top- 18/20. (My largest size was a 7X.)

I lost my weight with Weight Watcher's & Zumba. I've lost 302 lbs. You can visit my weight loss website at www.freewebs.com/infectiouslaughter
I'll be in the Jan. 2012 issue of People Magazine's "Half Their Weight" issue!!
