Quote of the day from The Beck Diet Solution by Judith Beck, PhD:

Once I build my confidence by giving myself credit, eating on plan will be easier.

I chose this quote today based on some of the responses to Mary's recent self-esteem test post.

Have a good day everyone,
Kim

My husband wanted to go to the book store last night so I tagged along.  I saw this and picked it up.  I saw the newer one, that included a weight loss plan with it.  I skimmed through it though and this one looked much better.

Thanks once again for mentioning it.  I have been looking for a book like this for a couple of years now.

I've only read a couple of chapters on it so far, but I like the concept that she uses "two muscles".  Your resistance muscle, and your giving in muscle.

Every time you resist eating something, you are strengthening your resist to eat in the future.  You are strengtheining your resistance muscle and weakening your give in muscle.

I really liked this concept.  I for one have never thought of how I give in is building a powerful force inside me to keep feeding into this bad behavior.  When I think back on when I resisted bad choices, I strengthened that muscle and always proud of myself for succeeding in that one little battle.

Guess many of those battles won will gradually strengthen myself to overcome bad desires to eat icky foods!

I really liked this.   This has actually made me want to "try" to see if this concept works, which I'm sure it will!  Habit forms after a while, especially if you succeed.

Very cool.

I am going to see if it at the library!

I learned that for me, some of abusing food was me being addicted to negativity.  We can get addicted to that abusive cycle. I was! (Mary does this help you in any way understand how overeating did not really pay off - at least in a positive way?)

I try to tell you guys that every time you win the smallest battle, from walking away from what "everybody else is eating" to sticking to a portion plan one time chnages your brain...CHANGES you!

It's just hard when we need thousands of those small victories and we just get overwhelmed.

Yep, Neecee, SO true!  At first, it was hard for me to walk away and now it's very easy because I've trained my brain and my emotions to stay on plan.  At first it's pure willpower and then when repeated over and over, it becomes habit.  Now, it usually doesn't occur to me to even want what others are having.....and I was a MAJOR emotional, binge eater for many many years.  I used to think that it wasn't fair that I was the fat one, the one who had to always be on a diet, blah, blah, blah.  Well life's not fair but I am rewarded for staying on plan - I'm thin and I feel good about my choices.

yes, Kimmie! After you defeat a small demon, you begin to realize..hey that was not that bad ...not at all.

I very quickly realized how GOOD I felt when I did not eat birthday cake every damn time in the work breakroom. Over time, if I even tasted a bite of cake, i usually am surprised how little it tasted as good as I recalled.

I am now as addicted to that feeling of victory, of almost self-confirmation when I do eat on plan!

Holly:
Cognitive behavioral therapy is not only a way to win the battle against obesity, it's also helpful in so many other ways.  I'm glad you like the book!

Michelle:
I think there are several versions - hardback, workbook, and a newer version w/a diet.  I bought the hardback, original version - pink cover, says "works with any diet" "the Beck Diet Solution" "train your brain to think like a thin person" by Judith S. Beck.  I bought mine online, gently used, at half.com for ~$7.
