Dilemma

Hi Sherrie! It is all so dicouraging, but the truth is and you recognize it, I know: obesity is not going to go away all by itself... requires constant devotion and care - it IS a chronic disease!!!

I must echo Mary and say that of greater concern is your thought pattern of self denigeration and destruction. I forget...have you ever had therapy for this?  Whether yes or no, OA is a great choice as is foodaddicts (though i know nada about that, just seems to deal with the head stuff going on).

I am at the top of this list with food compulsion, trust that. You guys give me so much credit as you see me today but only i know how many years and how many times i have felt the despair I read in so many posts.

It's just too easy to say, I mean DUH:  just do this thing. It is so much more complicated than that. Many folks may say that it requires an asskicking (which may get us thru a bad afternoon or one table of goodies), but i propose another way to look at this: why not cut yourself some slack more often?

Why NOT accept this side of yourself long enough to understand that this is your pattern and it does not have to bleed over into an all day, then weeks long period of abuse.

Not many of us will be 100% at this...if we manage to become perfect at it,  it IS a matter of time before we let old demons rise up.  I'm saying - welcome those demons in for a spell, get to know them and understand how to deal with them.

Look at Mary - she sets up times when she does not have to be spot on. That's one way to deal with it.

Others, like myself, work at avoiding things that I know trigger me:  getting too hungry, being isolated and alone, getting enough rest, making exercise a priority.

However you do this, please stop berating yourself. Yes, it is whiny at times - all of us are that way. But there is a GOOD purpose in whining if we look for it - it helps us reset our buttons, maybe, or helps us find a new way to things or ?????

Think of 2 year olds...when they whine, we usually hug them first, maybe slap down a little sternness, but we ALWAYS fix what they perceive the problem is, right? In a more productive way, ideally, right????

Sherrie, I would also agree with Lor - to be ANY pounds down from one year ago at our age?  are you effin kidding me...is awesome!

Thanks, guys,....I appreciate all the feed back and support.  It's true, I have a hard time seeing myself as a success in this whole process and need to be more forgiving.  I am a perfectionist at heart...which can make life difficult in other aspects besides food also.  Maybe a better resolution for me this year is to be kinder to myself and allow for a slip here and there without turning it into 2-3 days- week etc.

I am definitely a food addict and addicted to sugar for sure.  I think I'm going to shoot for the food addict's food plan (it's been relaxed some since I was last on it and seems quite healthy).  It's a start and something I think I can live with.

Still have a lot of entertaining this week and the family will be here through the 4th.  Think I'm shooting for the 5th and trying not to overdo tooooo much between now and then.

Here's to a happier, healthier, saner New Year for all of us.

I have done it all!! Atkins, WW, Jenny C., Slimfast, etc. I did Atkins for a long time, I lost a LOT of weight on it, AND I have to tell you, I had my cholesterol (etc) checked before the diet, and 2 months later my cholesterol DROPPED about 20 points. I kid you not. :) Its a very pleasant "diet" to be on once you get over the initial shock of loss of breads and sugar. lol. Anyway I eventually went off that diet and tried a few others, and when I went to try Atkins again (years later), it just didn't work for me. I started being real religious counting carbs, eventually counting carbs AND calories and still got very disappointing results so I gave up and went to WW, had success there too. I think all the plans work if you stick to them like you said ... the question really is what is your eating/cooking style? Good luck, I hope you post an update with what you decided to do. :)
