I HOPE YOU ALL CAN HELP
first off I will like to say hello to everyone.....
Never been to this forum before, my situation is a little different... I had GBS 10/05 started out @ 285 lost 100lbs in the 1st month, but since then have gained about 30lbs back. I"ve been trying to get it off but it's so diffucult, I am apart of the WLS Grads forum and they are the best.... I tried ww and didn't work for me, I went to see nut and he ask me if wanted to go on a liquid diet (OPTIFAST) for a month or 2... I decided against it, because I need to get in the habit of eating healthy foods again. I been researching ATKINS, which brought me here... as I'm reading about the program it seems alot like the life of post GBS patient, I really want to try this out and get started back in the right direction of my journey. One of my advantages is I can't tolerate sugars and breads or else I will DUMP something terrible. Do you think Atkins will work for me being I had surgery, and my digestive system is different?
Thanks in advance
Shanita

The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person's determination
Hi Shanita,
Atkin's is a fantastic diet. There are quite a few of us on this board doing Atkin's right now. The results are fabulous and motivational.
Considering you had RNY, the only thing I can think of that might be a little bit of a problem with you doing Atkin's is your malabsorption. If I were you, I would stay away from really high-fat foods on Atkin's, because I would imagine they would cause diarrhea (considering your body wouldn't be able to absorb ALL of the excess fat...)
Aside from that, I think it would be great for you. I do suggest that you read the book completely before starting the diet because although the rules are simple, it makes the diet a lot easier if you understand why you're avoiding the foods you have to avoid.
Best of luck to you!!

HI
I am post of Rny and come here for support to get ideas as I maintain using Atkins/Southbeach for maintainance. I have not had any regain besides five or so here or there but it could seriously happen if I were not careful. I find the low carb hi protein lifestyle very useful. I too dump on sugars. I am a little not much further out than you and I think you are on the right track. Many blessings and continued success.

Hi Shanita, welcome to the non-op board. I have a friend who had RNY and she did Atkins and lost. I have PCOS, which makes it hard to lose weight, but I've lost 129 pounds on Atkins. My plastic surgeon cut off the rest!
Like Neen said, it's vital to read the book, preferably the 2002 edition. You can also go on www.atkins.com and enroll for free classes and the forum is great to keep you in line.
My main suggestion is that you only eat what is on the list of allowed foods. A lot of people make the mistake of eating a lot of processed foods that have hidden sugars and starches in them that will eventually slow your weight loss down. Your body processes starch the same exact way that it does sugar, so starch is definitely a no-no. And it is vital on Induction that you get in 20 carbs from your veggies everyday! Some people claim to be on Atkins, but are not following the rules.
We have a LOT of conversations about Atkins around here, so feel to jump in any time. And if you have anymore questions, let us know.
Merry Christmas,
Mary
