I just heard something on the 10 o'clock news that I thought I would share. I found it funny in a sad ironic sort of way. It said that studies are showing that sugar can be just as addicting as crack or heroine.  Too bad they didn't just ask us people struggling with wl. If they need more proof that sugar is addictive, they can ask any new Atikins dieter beginning induction, and carb withdrawls.

what is hard is the definition of sugar is all carbs:  fruits, veggies, grains - it is not about only desserty foods/drinks!

In other words, your body does not differentiate much between the sugar in a lemon drop and an apple.  True, the apple contains fiber and pectin and other minerals/vitamins to bind it up somewhat.

In my mind, it's scary cuz peeps are not educated about it and begin to rule out very healthy foods, like potatoes. Okay, very few really do have trouble assimilating potatoes - I won't arhue that. But most of us can and should eat them 1-2x a week.  Hold the gravy.

What makes me squidgy is, not many among us will really eat only meat & veggies, like forever, which is what a WOE requires. On the other hand, it is a journey and a half to train ourselves to eat good nutritious foods - leave the low nutritious stuff to the roadside!

THat's why LC diets like Atkins "climb the ladder", ie meat and veggies, add in low glycemic foods over time.  One shouldn't only ever eat meat and veggies, but it's helpful for starting weight loss.

...which then begins to look more like South beach, the Zone, Mediterranean diet and less like the basic purist approach to Atkins.

Jerz, you know I agree with you basically:  better to choose in moderation whole grain items and eat less than a processed white version. Those of us who know this realize we tend to get more satiety & nutritive value from a nice piece of whole grain bread as opposed to a white bagel.

And back to the OP, it's fine to treat some foods like crack...I just have an issue with the loaded term sugar. Glycogen, which is sugar turned into the currency that muscles use to operate finds a way to convert to what the body needs.

On lowcarb friends, it is to laugh, really it is when people bash on sugar but mainline things like stevia and other sugar subs. I swear, it is kind of a joke don't you think?

I'm not addicted to fruits and veggies though.  When I'm hitting the kitchen at 9pm I'm not thinking "Oohh, god I've got to have a juicy apple." No... I'm thinking "C'mere butterfinger, c'mere peanut butter and honey, get your asses in meh belly!".
