In the discussion of cleansing, the topic of Oprah's recent weight increase came up. Many folks here have delt with a thyroid problem and might not be surpised to hear she had a thyroid diagnones last year. Oprah, being Oprah, talks about it in the January 09 O magazine.

I personally think all her efforts to loose weight in extreme ways has really messed up her metabolism and hope that now she has the medical issue under control that she can get healthy and stay healthy.

Think about it...each diet she employed low calorie, at times VLCD diets. That has indeed messed up her metabolism. As for thyroid diagnosis, I take that with a grain of salt. From all I've learned, you can overcome that with proper medication and routine.
It's why I am against low calorie diets. Last night I was at an Xmas party--the topic of my weight loss came up and I realized I was in a crowd of "I'm going back on Weigh****chers"...each person only succeeded in the short term on an LCD.
I am forever a fan of feeding weight loss and fueling your furnace, even if it is slower in the short run.

I haven't read the whole article so what I'm about to say may not be valid. However, I don't feel she can play the thyroid card. My thyroid is also messed up. I have Hashimotos disease. However, my thyroid levels are in check because of medication. Despite my fantastic levels, I still gain weight at alarming rates. Truth is, I gain because I eat too damn much and I suspect the same is true for her. I tell you, I cannot recall knowing anyone with a thyroid condition who said, "Oh my god, I've lost so much weight since getting my thyroid in check." I do see a lot of people blaming their obesity on thyroid issues. It's a piece of the pie, no doubt, but it is not the end-all cause of obesity; nor is a hectic schedule.
Oprah's my girl, so tread lightly here, now, friends and countrymen! LOL...I am shocked at the haters here on the 'net. wow, I just love her, so there. Aw I guess she has been the queen for way too long, there's bound to be some downhill.
I have not heard her speak nor read about her thyroid condition, but i find it hard to believe that she would lie about such things. I do not see as telling us about is as some type of cop-out - she knows more than most people that what it means is she has to work harder.
My own weight loss is pretty slow, so I am the LAST person to bash on a sister. Does she overeat? oh hell, who doesn't. I'm sure she has her moments. I could put it on - just like her - in about two months of not even binging. Just eating what many would call "normal", I'd be fat again in no time.
I do know from reading her book with Bob Greene that she most recently (within the past 10 years) has not used VLCD. She does employ lower fat levels. She works HARD at working out. She used to run 8 miles most days plus do strength training. She was not dainty even working that hard...just like me!
Remember, folks, she only has about 30-40# to lose to goal, so eating much more than 1800 cals daily is out of the question here. It's not like she has another 75-100# to go and can swing upwards of 2000 cals here and there. She is over 50, and let me tell ya, most of us cannot eat as much as we used to. I won't even argue with any of you til you have reached age 50 on this one. just wait...it's a blast.
I truly look at her with sympathy/empathy and admiration to speak very freely about it. She is like most of us - when we ain't focusing on the goal, we get fat. Stop hatin now.

I'm just sayin, she can't play the thyroid card. It's not the cause of her weight gain. She's a prominent figurehead in our society. It's not right for her to say "Oh it's my thyroid." There are many who think that if Oprah says it, it's doctrine.
