" my kids and husband say they do not want to suffer becasue I choose to"
It is not like you are choosing to suffer and want them to suffer too! You are choosing to be healthy, so you can live longer and healthier! I'm sorry they don't recognize that. If I didn't get rid of temtation in my house, I don't think I would have made it through the first day!!
I'm on Atkins (ok, trying to get back on Atkins after the holiday) I've only been on it about 2 1/2 weeks so far, and its been working for me, it's just tough to stick to at first. I gave myself Thanksgiving off, and am now struggling to get back on. I plan on giving myself Christmas off, and am not sure how that week will be, cause I'll be at my parents house, but am going to do my best.

Many people on the non-op board are successful on Atkins. I don't follow a particular plan, per se. I eat healthy - protein first, whole grains, fruits, dairy, vegetables, and the occasional crap (chips, desserts, etc). I measure everything so I know exactly how much I'm eating. I think planning meals is an important investment in your health.
Remember to take it one meal or one day at a time. None of us are perfect so when we eat something we didn't plan, we get back on the wagon at the next meal (or the next day). To be successful, healthy eating has to become a way of life, not a temporary thing.
I firmly believe that exercise is key too. Building muscle increases your metabolism so once you increase your muscle mass, you burn many more calories compared to having low muscle mass.
And regarding the "temptations" in your kitchen......if it's food with no nutritional value, no one needs to eat that. I know when I kept junk in the house, it was very difficult to resist it. Plan to eat the "temptations" or treats outside of your home - on occasion, when you've planned a treat, have it so you don't feel deprived.
Best wishes,
Kim J.
Congratulations, Atasca.
You won't turn back because you've already shown that you think you are worth taking care of. And you're right.
As to husband and kids not wanting to "suffer" - do they realize that indeed and in fact you ARE what you eat? They will enjoy the acid-producing foods now, and pay a high price later. They will then know what "suffering" really is. Tell them to go to www.foodmatters.tv and take a little look and listen. Time to wake up.
Making the right choices with food may not feel awesome on day one, two, or three.... but up the road, it's SO very worth it.
Yes, food is everywhere. So is poison. Feed your precious self the life-giving nourishment you deserve. You do not deserve to consume poison. Put it away.
My lifestyle is different from every other person's on this board. But the bottom line is similar, in that I am giving myself awesome nutrition, so that my body does NOT crave anything. Once healthy, the body occasionally "craves" something that it honestly needs. Example: one of my business partners was fighting a health issue, and at the same time was craving, desperately, our meal replacement shakes. She had her blood work done, and her naturopath discovered she was deficient in the very amino acid which is in the highest concentration in the shakes and soups. At this time she was drinking up to 4 shakes a day.
Otherwise, cravings can signal true imbalances but the body has no idea how to right the wrong. Someone low on calcium may crave Cheetos, but those aren't a good choice!
WOW I went on a tangent. Sorry. I think you're on the right track, and I truly hate to see you attacked by those you love and who do love you. Maybe you're making hubby feel a bit guilty. Hold the line. Don't waver.
You can read my story on my profile. This board is full of success stories. Each has chosen her own path, but all have this in common. We will take our health seriously, and we will do what it takes to get, or stay in, control of our weight.
