Motivation ideas
I know several of us need motivation to keep us going. I'm at whits end trying to think of motivational ideas while being broke. I have always used motivational tools to lose weight with great success. Unfortantuely everything I want though requires large amounts of funds that I don't have. What are your motivation tools that keeps you going?
Hello, good morning, happy Thanksgiving week.
I love motivational tapes and books, and I don't love pouring a lot of money out for them, so I go to www.half.com and buy them for exceptionally cheap prices! One I would recommend to do with bettering your life in general (including getting a handle on weight) is 'The Slight Edge' by Jeff Olson. You can get it on CD so you can listen in the car if you're too busy to do books.
My latest find was a CD called 'Mindful and Mindless Eating' by Robin Maynard-Dobbs. I actually got to meet Robin, as her parents live in a nearby assisted living facility where I did a presentation. She's absolutely amazing. Her CD was $15 and it's unlike anything I've heard. Her website is www.awareeating.com and that's what her focus is - awareness. You can check her out online; she works in the entire US and not just in Seattle. What I loved was her gentle approach, so loving, so encouraging.
I'm not sure if that is the sort of thing you meant by motivational tools. For me, getting rid of cravings is the only thing that works 100% of the time, and of course the foundation is cleansing. We, too, don't have a bunch of excess money lying around!

Yup, what Ruth said: books. My sources were garage sales, used book stores, public library for these. Even now when I can in theory afford those things, I have quit buying books in general. I must own 500 books and there is only so much room.
Even pick up the weird-os....one of my most inspirational books was written by Susan Powter. She was the first to place the notion that if i did not love my body - as it is - I would never consistently attend to its care.
While I read her book I actually looked at myself in the gym mirror while I lifted weights and either praised myself or prayed for God to help me praise it. I learned to look at form while lifting - also very important.
At work, we trade magazines, too. Ask around and see if anyone will off their old SHAPE magazines or Prevention, both two of my favorites! Barnes and Nobles allows people to read magazines at the store - go there! The public libraries also have magazines. Make copies of articles that hit a nerve!
Hol, when i was broke was when I taught myself how to walk - outside, rain or shine, dark or light. It is free. It is nearly always available wherever i am. I never had much luck doing workouts at home in front of the tv, so if that is you too, stop and get shoes on and go outside. You donot have to be the maniac I am - even a regular 20 minutes would be pretty wonderful. It's primarily a stress relief - you will not beleive how calming it is.
If you have that much damn snow, save up for snowshoes. It is a kick in the pants and very good workout. Hell, you only have to do about 20 = 1 hour landlubber style. If you hate the cold air, wrap a scarf around your head. Take guafnasin (mispelled all to hell, but it is mucinex).
You can work this out to find ways and things YOU will do!

"The only way to keep your health is to eat what you don't want, drink what you don't like, and do what you'd rather not." ~Mark Twain
I was reading the other day that you said you had a recumbent cycle. I put mine in the great room so it will inspire me to get on the damned thing. Out of sight is out of mind, so I put it where it can call my name and say, "Move your ass, Mary".
What I really like about it is that you don't have to be in workout clothes and shoes just to hop on for a leisurely thirty minute session of peddling while talking to everyone else in the room. And then when I need a good workout, I set that puppy for a good interval training session and an hour later, I've burned a few hundred calories and my lower body is tight as drum. Try it, cuz you need to start somewhere, no? Us exercise haters have got to find little ways to help us get the Jello in Motion!

I don't do well with motivational/self help books. I read them and half of my brain says 'hey, thats true, it could work for me!' and the other half says 'yeah right. what a load of s**t! who are you kidding?' My motivation is things I can see, like my pants fitting looser, having room between the steering wheel and my gut, fitting in the train seat 12/22 on the way to my parents for Christmas. I want to take my 5 yr old dd to Disneyland one of these days, but am afraid that I won't fit in the rides with her (and she WONT go by herself!) The last time I went on rides was about 6 1/2 years ago, I was a size 26 and I was trying to go on the dragon swing ride. It was crowded, and I was the last one on, and the bar that goes across your lap wouldn't shut and lock all the way because I was too big!! How mortifying!! I want to have family pictures taken and not be ashamed to show them because I look like an elephant next to the rest of my family. I would like to have guys take a second look at me, and not because I'm soo big its gross.... I guess those are more goals than motivation, but they're MY motivation....
