Considering not having the surgery

I have lap band surgery scheduled for Dec. 1st and am thinking of backing out.  I have been trying to diet for the surgery and have gained 10 lbs (mostly because I stress eat and thinking of surgery is stressful!)

I just know today I woke up with a new determination that I can do this.  I know exactly what will work for me.  I have a plan.  I'm giving myself a week.  If I stick to this plan for a week, I'm going to postpone my surgery and revisit it in a couple of months.

If you feel a new determination, I say continue the process, knowing that you're just seeking approval for the surgery. And that you will have time to make that decision.  No rush.

For the folks still thinking about WLS:  there's no easy answer for a crowd, this is such an individual choice.

Fear of surgery is normal in my book and yet none of us are scared to stay obese! Luckily - or unluckily  - depending on how you look at it, it's just easier staying fat and *****ing about it.

The goal should be to weigh risks against benefits of surgery. Fear should be factored in no matter what as a side consideration, but not a show stopper! Human nature tends to  lead us into thinking WE will be the ones who will have the stricture or the tear or the infection. In truth, very small percentages have long term issues! A somewhat larger percentage has some irritating to scary non-lfe threatening issues to contend with.

PS:  I was definitely relieved when I got turned down for WLS...even thru my disappointment tears I had to acknowledge that.

Being/staying obese is basically a matter of choice. Yes, some of us do have stubborn metabolisms and may never be weight-chart slim, but all in all there are clear controllable reasons why each of us is fat.

Others may have serious physical limitations that may impair meaningful weight loss.

My personal yardstick is to look three times longer and harder at doing any WLS if you:

1.  are over age 40
2.  are 100# overweight or over 40 bmi
3.  have proven that you can and do practice many good habits that will help keep this weight lost after surgery GONE!

Definitely, i have heard and agree with younger, lighter folks who may do it.  Number 3 is just about the most important item to make sure of. Without that, just stay fat and save your money.

Best of luck and stick around!

I can't make thedecision for you and neither can anyone else, this has to be a personal decision.  From the perspective of someone who has taken that leap, it was the one of the best gifts I have ever given myself.  I do not rank it higher than my children, my husband, or my hysterectomy....lol, but damn close to the hysterectomy.  My goal was to have lost 100 lbs. by my 1 yr. anniversary, I missed that. I had lost 90 by 10/4, and was seriously considering having another adjustment around Thanksgiving.....Roll forward one month.....on 11/4/08 I reached that 100 lb. mark....WOOHOO!!!!
The lapband was the right decision for me, my co-morbidities, all gone!!!!
Continue going through your appointments but also continue to work on your issues and habits, regardless of your decision you will have to make a lifestyle change to ever be successful with or without the surgery.
Only you can make the decision, and only you will know if it's the right one once it's made....I wish you all the best.
