Actually.. as many diabetics already know.. about 58% of excess protein is turned into glucose by the liver and distributed to the organs that need it. Mostly.. ketones are the preferred fuel source, but yes. .. the brain does need glucose, and the liver is more than happy to provide.
Gotta be true cause when I wake up with a high blood sugar having not had any carbs at all... it had to come from some place. no?

Not a bad argument, but I see a dietician regularly and she talks about the dangers of atkins. I agree with your statement about proteins though. I work as an Herbalife distributor and run a test called a shape scan which is accurate to within 2-5% of submersion for body fat content and from that we determine what someone's protein needs are. If atkins works for you maybe it is something you should stick with but I would just be sure not to be on the induction phase for too long. If I could interest you in a healthier plan that gets better results would you consider it?
Oh.. it's not an argument.. In the absence of carbs, the liver WILL turn protein into glucose. A simple finger stick proves that to me every morning. Everyone experiences dawn phenomenon, but a diabetic's blood sugar will spike because of it. How can blood sugar spike unless there is glucose in the blood? It can't... the finger stick is specifically measuring the level of glucose in the blood, nothing else and if one isn't ingesting carbs (which will turn to glucose) then the liver is manufacturing it to provide the brain with what it needs. Between 4:00am and 11:00am, the body realizes that it's had no food and processes stores of protein. Some diabetics find success at avoiding this spike by eating a fat snack (such as black olives.. a piece of cheese) before bed. It's a GREAT system. isn't it? I don't see a nutritionist.. I'm on a steady routine of blood studies every three months and regular exams. My doctor is very happy with the results and recommends I stick to this.
Thank you for the offer. .. I did try herbalife in the past. A low carb regime works very well for me and I think it's good for Janina to give it a shot for 2 reasons. 1. Her body reacted to it pre-lap band surgery and 2. She's already lost a phenomenal amount of weight and at a plateau it's always good to "mix things up a bit".
I don't put anyone's plan down.. I believe that as individuals, our body chemistry has variations and we all react differently. We must also take into account our activity level and metabolic disorders... seek and find something which works and stick to it. I've been doing low carb for over a year (carbs as close to zero as possible) and my markers are dramatically improved.. including glucose control.. so for me.. AMEN.. it's good! :)
Overall I'm down about 115 lbs.. and feeling GREAT! Amen!

Hiya Richard! Yeah, it's a discussion, so no harm done.
I will say that meeting peeps like Lori, Neen & Mary, it is rather incredible that a percentage of people, esp we "vintage girls" simply cannot eat much - or any grains/fruits! It is a trip. Those three can hardly eat any other foods past meats, veggies, fats.
I am very much like you, basically believe that all foods can fit. I learned with my own body that I guess I cannot process food like that as well any more - two years ago i was terrified that the scale was climbing - and i am a complete exercise freakazoid plus had bascially good food habits (no fast food, very little added sugar in general terms) There's lots of corroborating evidence; the fist time I heard of such a notion was Dr. Christiane Northrup's writngs and speeches.
Lori is exactly right - proteins and some fats will morph into simple sugar, which is the currency that our muscles, organs and brain uses. Atkis can get lesss and less effective over time. Our bodies will do what it has to to keep things the same.
Men are far less apt to have to go that extreme. NOT to say you don't have your own struggles!

Gawd.. that is so utterly simple that I'm slapping myself upside the head knowing it just didn't occur to me. I couldn't imagine why my bs is increasing while my diet remains the same......... it's trying to maintain the "status quo". DOH... now.. what to do about it.. tap tap tap..lol
