PMS blues!!!
Hi all -
I am new here, but just think this is a great site - I wish I had found it 2 years ago when I started on
my final weight loss journey.
My weight is pretty stable now, but I really have a hard time with binging around my period. I have clients who have the same issues too, and the best I can offer them (and myself) is to allow it, and
accept that we all do it, but that we do it less as we get into better habits.
Anyone have anything more inspiring than that? On a day like today, it really seems like a lame thing to say (or hear!)
Thanks! E

Erin, I have PCOS and there were times, when it was undiagnosed, that I actually had PERMANENT PMS. I would be crying cuz I was fat and on my way to Popeye's and I couldn't help myself.
The thing my doctor told me is that hormone fluctuations inflame your nerve endings. So when I feel it coming on, I start taking Motrin, an anti-inflammatory. It works great for me.
Congratulations on the your weight loss.

Erin, around my TOM i work harder at a couple things:
1. getting exercise, against all physical tendencies to go fetal and moan. It has not let me down yet to alleviate stress and added bonus: keeps me away from people i want to hurt!
2. eating fresh fruit especially berries or other high water fruit (melons, etc)
3. Use ibuprofin or any other drug like Midol. It works!
I also recognize that maybe my body DOES need a bit more food, and allow lean meat, fruit or veggies in bigger servings.
I have taken to 60% choco bars too....which rings my chocolate bell. I will admit that sweets are not my big temptor, but once in a while, the choco bug will bite at that time.

Hi Neecee -
Thanks for great suggestions. You are right - moving totally helps, and I like your suggestions
for the water fruits. Do you think that counters the bloating feeling?
What is this 60% chocolate you are mentioning....I am not sure I have ever heard of it!
And, any thoughts you have that go through your mind to bring you "back" to the present? I
find my mind just races into the most insane places and it takes a bit of constructive thinking
to bring me back.
Thanks again, Erin

Hi Erin - about your mind racing...alll I can say is try to become an Observer in your body - like you are watching another person have these thoughts. Try to be without judgment, don't label thoughts as good/bad, jus****ch them like balloon sayings and let them all drift.
We don't HAVE to act on every thought, right? We don't for the meaner thoughts, usually, right?
So, for other thoughts like "I want pizza" when it's not part of your food plan, just observe that thought and let it be. If you are truly hungry - can you find a savory, satisfying snack that may replace pizza? Are you even really hungry? Drink water, go for a walk, make plans to have some pizza, just not right now.
I often set a timer and then go about something else - housework, writing a letter, washing my car. We really do forget about urges when we choose not act right away!
I have even been known to lay on the floor and look at the celing, imagining myself walking all over my house using the ceiling as the floor - the "point" of this type of thing is, while silly, is to get a new perspective on my life. WHY do I HAVE to go right over to the cupboard and whither over a box of crackers cuz they SOUND good? WHY?
We know in our logical mind that we don't have to, but another part (maybe the emotive section of our mind?) is wearing the Daddy Pants. We think it, therefore we then do it. THAT is the crazy part. Switch gears, right????

Erin, I usually cave in to these urges as well but I find reminding myself of my goal and that I don't want to have to re-lose everything that is already gone is a great deterrent to binging or eating unhealthy if I must binge. I just don't want to have to start over. It's been too hard to get where I'm at.
