So now what?

I found out today that I'm evidently suffering from some adrenal fatigue (I guess it's a common problem with hypothyroid) and they've told me to quit exercising!

That pretty much goes against every freaking thing I'm trying to do right now.    They say that it just puts more stress on my adrenal glands.... and that I'll likely end up gaining weight as a result (maybe explains the weight gain I had and got sooo pissed off about).

I'm just really frustrated with one road block after another.   I know that I need the exercise to be healthy, but now they are telling me that exercise is NOT healthy for me right now.

So I start on this massive supplement routine for a while and if that doesn't help it, then they will put me on hydro cortisone or something like that to stabilize my cortisol levels.

The whole thing is making my head swim.... and I'm sick of having one thing after the other get in my way of getting this weight off :(

Hey Jigglenomore:
Did you ask the dr if you could do weight training?  I think weight training is key to losing/maintaining since it builds muscle and the more muscle we have, the easier it is to burn fat.
I'm sorry you are frustrated!  Work on healthy eating and hopefully that combined with the supplement routine will stabilize your adrenal gland issue.
Best wishes!

whut???? well, i never heard of that. Hey,. play it their way and see how it goes. Wonder if you can do light conditioning - situps, stretches and the like?  That way you can work on tone.

wow...

Their exact words were "you must NOT do any exercise of a competitive nature"  When I questioned that (because I have no eff'in clue what that means) they said "no exercise in which you are exerting yourself.  You are free to talk a leisurely walk, but nothing strenuous.

Sorry... strenuous is the only thing that burns fat at any rate :(

Part of me says "screw them and their voodoo"  the other part of me is so desperate to feel human again that I'm tempted to test it... I just don't know.     I just want to get some weight off to stop hurting so much!

I severely disagree! Walking has helped several of us here on the board. It is the centerprice of my workout! Yes, i do some more strenuous stuff here and there, but I have lost more weight by backing off the INSANE amount I used to do and teaching myself that my food intake is 90% of why my body loses weight!  Weigh****chers taught me that. I lost more weight when i backed off to 30-60 minutes a day walking several days a week rather than my heavy gym load/bike trainings, etc.

Go get some books on walking...Dr. Edell, Leslie Sansone, etc...there must be 50 on the shelves at the library!

Please, start a moderate walking program and maybe later when meds get you straightened out, you can add in more strenuous activity.

Walking + conditioning exercises are not considered competitive! Alos look into water aerobics - not much of a fat burner, but easy on our systems and take measurements - i lost .75 inches off my waist in 6 weeks, but lost zero weight.

The problem is, my knees are shot.  I can't walk any distance without needing narcotic pain meds.   The only thing that I can do, that doesn't render me popping vicodin immediately, is to walk on a very steep incline... nice and slow, which subsequently puts my heart rate through the ceiling, because well.... I'm fat and out of shape :(   so I'm feeling a little lost.    The only pool  in my town is over 20 miles away, it would end up costing me over 15 dollars just in gas each trip... which I just can't afford right now.

I think I'll just try it at a slightly lower incline and see if I can walk on it without getting my heart pounding.

I'm going to go for some light weight training as well.   I'm guessing anything that doesn't get my heart pumping is okay.  (They are concerned about adreline production)

Just feeling a little defeated right now.  This too shall pass.

Sorry to hear your having problems.  Do you take vicodin a few times a week?  It's not an answer of course, but if you do take it regularly, maybe you can do your exercises right after you take it.  Good luck on trying to decrease  your incline a bit and see if that works for you.

Hey Neecee:

Isn't your wog strenuous?  If it's a walk/jog kinda thing, it's  not a casual stroll?  I guess everyone's idea of strenuous is different but if a dr told me "no strenuous activity", I'd still walk for exercise - at a race walk pace 'cuz I don't consider that strenuous like some of the other stuff I do (e.g., spinning).  Isn't sex strenuous sometimes?  Surely he didn't mean she can't have sex?

The words "competitive" and "strenuous" are too vague and mean different things to different people.

well, right...NOW my walk after 20+ years is rather strenuous! I do a mile in about 13 minutes.

But when I started out it was well, pitiful.

Good point, though...and I would ask what that meant exactly. Maybe joggles can ride a bike? I mean, in my mind, anything that is not busting much of a sweat would be non-competitive.

My bottom line: I feel so strongly that people get intimidated about if they cannot do a full metal workout, don't try...and that is so not true.

Even if jigs can do a conditioning workout on the balance ball, and maybe a few floor exercises, surely that would help tone, hardly do much for calorie burn, but yanno???

Oh I WISH sex was considered strenuous, tho I *have* been lucky enuf to classify it at times somewhere close.

Yea, jigglenomore...inquiring minds want to know!
That whole idea of non-competitive?  Well almost everything in my life is a competition so that explanation wouldn't work for me.

Maybe she could do some weight/resistance training with some free weights and bands.  The balance ball is a good idea.  It will help tone but if she can build muscle, that would make a huge difference.

Speakin' of the strenuous sex...my man is much younger than me so it seems to be a bit strenuous (but fab) sometimes.
