Hello all.  I haven't been on the forums for a long time so I will give you a quick summary of where I am at.  I have been aproved for GBP through my employers insurance.  I jumped through all the the hoops and am now down to just the financial hardship.  My 20% is nearly $4000.00 which is about 1/6th of my yearly income.  I am a single mother and have poor credit.  I was signed up for surgery last October but the plans fell through.
So here is the question.  I have a small business making jewelry and my mom thought it might be a good idea to start a website or something to sell my jewelry for the direct purpose of having the surgery (minus restocking).  Do you think this is a good idea?   If I did make one do you think I would be able to have a link to it on my page here?  And most of all do you think that it would be effective?
I have been wanting a website for my jewelry for a long time but I know cost can be an issue, so as a second part of my questions is: does anyone know a good site for free websites?

Thank you for your time!

Heather

Hello there, Heather!!

I hope this post finds you well.

I'm going to try and answer some of your questions.

http://www.free-space.net/ is a free site that lets you have the following at no charge:
200MB Reliable disk space (Ad-Free)
2GB Powerful monthly transfer allowance
Web control panel (cPanel) and FTP access
Easy Website Builder (in cPanel) Powerful & Dynamic
Use your registered domain or choose a free subdomain
Supports HTML PHP CGI Perl MySQL and more
5 Email accounts at your domain

I have not set up a site there, yet. But, as soon as time allows, I'll be setting up a personal site. I have friends that have set up basic sites there and are pleased with the service. Since it's free, anyway, I'd suggest you check it out, toy around with it and see what you can do with it. You may find you like web designing more than jewelry designing!!

It would be easy to put a link to your site on your profile. All you have to do is to type:

Click here to go to Heather's Awesome Jewelry site!!
LOL DON'T CLICK THERE!! It won't let me write the HTML code without making it a link!! Email me for the correct code!! [email protected]

As fsr as effectiveness goes, a website would give you a way to reach people, all over the world, 24/7. I think if you marketed it right (more than just a mention here on OH) AND (most importantly) you have a product that people want to buy, you'll probably exerience success!!

Hope this helps

Kelly

I think i made a site of my own at geocities..you could try selling on ebay...or even amazon..which is going to take some of what you make on each item. But i think it would be worth a try. You wont know until you try. You could make the site..and spread the word to everyone. It is going to take time for people to find the site and hear about it before they start finding it and buying from you. It wont happen just over night. But i think it would be worth a try..what stinks is it takes alittle investment to get anything to come out of it..But I am sure even some of us on the board are willing to help you out..I know i'd love to see some of the stuff that you make and see if any of it interests me! Let me know if you get one up and running! I'd love to see..and the best of luck to you!!

Hi Heather,

I'm hanging out on the "non surgical" site for a very very good reason. However, as far as creating a small business which you advertise on the Internet - awesome! I'm a member of a group called 'WAHM swappers" (I always want to say wife swappers!) which stands for Work At Home Moms, of course... we each buy something from one other member each month. While this hasn't proven to be overwhelmingly effective for me, it has gotten three women interested in doing continued business with me in my nutritional cleansing company, aside from the monthly "swap" purchases. I'm sure many similar forums exist, but YES you need the website. I don't link my business to this forum or OH at all, because it seems to be an ethical grey area.

I got my domain name on GoDaddy.com and although it's not free, it's pretty darned close! Check them out, unless you receive other/better advice. Their staff is friendly, and very helpful to first-timers. For what you do, a nice bright site where the jewelry is easy to see and choose would be great, and wouldn't need to be really complicated. You can accept PayPal for payment as well.

The Ebay suggestion is good, too.

Well, it's off to the coal mines (ha ha) for me.

Thank you so much for the information.  I really appreciate it.  I will send out an update when I get something up and running for anyone interested in seeing it.  I have decided to go with a donation site with the jewelry being given for different donation amounts so that I don't end up in trouble with OH.  Thanks again.

You can do Ebay, or Craigslist, which I don't know how it works.
I love shopping on Ebay. I have also sold a couple of items.
You could do that in addition to the donation site.
That would widen your exposure.
