Anyone tried Alli?

Hi all! I haven't been on here in a week or so and thought I would drop in. Hope everyone is doing well! My husband drives for Schneider (over the road) and I've been with him for the past week and a half. I'll try to get on here more - it keeps me motivated :)  So I've been doing WW, as most of you know, and I lose 1-2 lbs a week. Sometimes I have a really good week and lose 3 or 4 lbs. My questions is has anyone tried Alli? I thought about doing in in conjunction to WW and see if it does anything. I have a couple months before I go to DisneyWorld and would love to be a size 16 but that's a little reaching for the stars...Right I'm in a comfortable 20. I know I can get to an 18 by then but a 16 would be FANTASTIC! If I did Alli, I only plan on doing it for 30 days before I go to Florida.  If anyone's tried Alli, did it work for you? Thanks!

That would be great,, even if you try it for a month the cost wouldnt be soo high.. If you try it let me know.. and we can try it together and email back and fourth,, I need all the encouragement I can get.. And I will do the same for you.. rhonda

Pharma is in my background, so I take particular interest in Alli because...I don't agree with it. Long story short, Alli inhibits the absorption of fat (is released via defecation) and that lack of absorption minimizes caloric intake.  So, that 150-300 calories a day from fat contribute to your weight loss of maybe a  pound a week if you're dieting. Adding this to WW, will result in an even lower fat intake which can result in inability to lose weight, too few calories, hair loss, and other negative changes.  I would advise against it. Here's the thing.  Fat isn't the cause of obesity.  Excess calories and/or inactivity or high carbs (as well as hormonal issues) are.  Fat, in fact, has gotten a bad rap and going low fat with one's diet isn't necessarily about "health" but about calories.  When it comes to dieting, there really are two ways--low fat combined with low call, or high fat  combined with low carb.  You can lose weight on both, but the question is, which delivers better health and weight loss results. From my research, I no longer believe in low cal as it is a primary cause for yo-yoing as it teaches the body to retrain its metabolism and gain weight back and then some.  Plus, fat isn't bad for you (unless you combine it with high carbs).  Fat, in fact, is  a great contributor to weight loss and good health (research supports this). So you can see, I am vehemently anti-Alli.

I will confess...yes, i tried it.  Did not work.  It's because my diet is only moderately high in fat; my problem is eating too many calories, overall, and Alli does not touch that.  And has been said, GOOD fats (nuts, olive, corn, canola, etc) are good for you. It helps you feel fuller. I aim for about 35-40% fat and try to keep the saturated fats (animal sources like meats, cheese, milk) down to 10-15% each day.  In theory, it sounded good. If a Whopper is 60 g of globby fat, Alli is supposed to block 25% of fat, which is about 15g, or 135 calories. Now remember that the total amount of calories in a Whopper is about what, 900-1100 or so? Yanno, just not that big of a deal in caloric savings. You could get to the same place by not eating fries with that. I did like it to use on vacation when foods are abundant in bad fats (deep fried anything, ice cream, candy, etc). it did not help me lose, but i do think it helped me eat vacation food without gaining too much. Umm, they mean it when they say it will cause rectal leakage. You had best be near a toilet the next day for a couple of hours when the moment of truth comes. Do NOT trust farts. LOL.   Overall, NOT worth the money. You will do better by eating balanced, whole foods in the right portions. You already KNOW the types of foods to eat very little of. Fast foods, desserty things, sodas. Two months, you could sure lose a size if you are diligent!

"Do not trust farts."  That's hysterical! I'm going to see how the rest of July goes. I'll be honest - I'll probably try it for the month of August because I just got to test it out for myself. I'll let you know how it goes or how it doesn't go...lol. Thanks for sharing your experience! I never even thought about using it on vacation - that's a good idea. However, that scares me more because I won't be able to run to the toilet :)

I did try Alli, ( I am not taking anymore) and it helped me get 20 pounds off, but I think it does more harm than good, especially if your problem is more of a metabolic type thing(thyroid and insulin related). (It depleted my vitamin D levels, even though I was taking the "one a day" supplement) I had 1 bad day where I overdid it, and I had the gas with oily discharge situation, and it was very unpleasant. Thankfully I was home, so I don't have any embarrasing stories to share. The one thing I love about Alli, is that the access to the website, where it logs your weight, gives you interesting tips to read about, and the best part, is the menu and grocery list generator. I would say it's a good tool to get you going in the right direction, but if you have any metabolic issues going on, I would think twice before using it. If you do try it, I would tell you that if you see oily discharge when you go potty, dont' think thats a good sign cause fat is leaving you. Alli works to help you loose weight when you don't see the orange oil in the toilet. Good luck either way, and if you have any questions, I am always around.
