What a lovely post to read first thing in the morning.
I understand how rough it can be when dieting is your only method to lose weight. Although I'm not "hurting", I don't exercise (because I'm too lazy) and I'm in the same boat.
When I started my pre-op diet, I did Atkins, and Atkins, if you read the book, is all about a chemical cycle your body goes into called ketosis. I didn't move one muscle and I managed to lose about 40 pounds in 4 months or so. Although it's a hard diet to follow (because you have to give up A LOT of "regular" foods, like bread, pasta, sweets, etc) it's quick and effective. So if you can manage to look at it one day at a time, it's do-able. You just have to be really strong each day, because absolutely no cheating is allowed, or you'll blow your ketosis. There's a great website about a lady who lost 40 pounds doing Atkins and she's dedicated her life to low carb living. The website is called Sugarfreesheila.com - great site.
When you lose some weight, and your body starts to hurt less, I'd switch to something easier, and add in the exercise. But that's down the road. However, keep that in mind while doing Atkins. It helped me each day, knowing "This won't be forever, this won't be forever!"
Keep you chin up, and your eye on the prize, sweetie. We're here to help you through whatever troubles you're having.
(((((BIG HUG)))))
I must second this thought on Atkins. It is amazing how little hunger you will feel if you do it to the letter. The other thing I like about it is that it gives you a big perspective on how certain foods do trigger hunger more readily. I discovered for example that yogurts - yup cute lil ole yogurts made me monstrously starving. Even the low sugar ones. This of course comes after the induction piece where a lot of foods are prohibited like Neen says.
Where it gets hard is after a time, for me it was 6 weeks, i felt like I was going to snap, in fact I did go off it entirely. Now I settled on eating higher level carbs , like ezekeial bread and berries, more often. i do eat the lesser grains, like mac & cheese, but trust me I load up on meats and veggies first. AND I stick to tiny portions, which btw, are the right portions that we should have stuck to all along - half your fist of that type of thing...that ain't much.
