INCREASING Cholesterol

It's not the numbers that bother me so much as the change in the numbers. Especially after doing things that the "Doctor" reccomended and are thought to be helpful in improving the numbers. All I can say is it will be very interesting to see what the "Doctor's" response is to the results. Thanks for everyone's input.

Don't get me started on the whole what Dr's know bit.  When it comes to nutrition, it's their weakness.  They are fall to the party line as many do.

There's an interesting study out there that food cholesterol has NOTHING to do with body cholesterol This is true; doc have known this for years.  Most people even after eating all the "right things" do not decrease cholo points more than 20 points - which can help certain borderline folks.  Due to genetics, some people's bodies manufacture more and there is no escaping meds to treat it.  Obesity can cause it, but as I say, I have a 68" MIL who has never weighed over 130# at her heaviest and hers spiked to over 400 at one point. She does, always did eat very high fat, FWIW.  But sodid her DH who never ever had cholo issues. He finally died at age 86, fachry-eye, yes, of heart disease after years of eating cream, steak fat, german sausage, pastries, potatoes in bacon fat. But 86? He also smoked. they both did for 40+ years. And drank like fish.  MIL is still kicking at age 85. Exercise is very important.  Though high cholesterol runs in my family as well on dad's side, I have not had to face it, I think because of my hearty exercise. My dad's was high in his 20's.

I'm gonna beg to differ here. My cholesterol was 244-- and six months into my pre-op diet was down to 170. Some people can and do lower their cholesterol through dietary changes.

I would not deign to differ in a case of a person who has lost the amount of weight that you have, Miz Shari! Your changes were based on an extraordinary cir****tance. A high percentage of people without WLS could not come close to your outcomes.

I'm talking about BEFORE WLS, through diet alone. Those were my numbers in May of last year, the change was after only the months of dietary changes, no surgery. Cholesterol is part heredity, part dietary. In some people it's more of one than the other. In my case, my whole family of Lipitor-heads has very high cholesterol-- they also eat very large amounts of meat and fatty foods, so it's hard to isolate the variable. In any case, yes, I changed my choleterol through diet-- so it must be at least possible for some people-- that's my point.

Jupiter, I get what you are trying to say. I'm saying many people will never know...they won't lose the dramatic amount of weight you as an individual have, surgery or not. I had mentioned that just being overweight, let alone SMO causes cholo to rise.  And I should have been more clear with that statement...weight loss aside, PCP's want a person to change the complexion of what they eat, so it may not mean reducing calories as much as lowering saturated fats, trans fats, high levels of sugar, processed grains.  My always skinny boss just had to delete his daily cream in his coffee and eat whole oats 3-4x weekly.  the caloric intake change probably canceled each food item out, but in his case, it did help, his came down 20 points in 8 weeks, end of story. My doctor is not as concernd about the cholo numbers (as long as they are under 250) as he is about the LDL/HDL relationship...mine cholo reads are 150-170, but still, my LDL was not where it should be. I just had a blood test after losing 40ish lubs, so we'll see if that amount of weight loss helped me at all. did your stats in that area improve as well?

Of course--- but I'll be damned if I can find the papers or I'd tell you the exact number. In any case, that was a year ago--- I suspect the numbers are much different now.

I'd say more likely it was the weight lost then contributed to the decrease in cholesterol.  JM2c.

It'd be impossible to know for sure, but you may be correct-- I see your point.
