I am not banded yet. I was hoping to be banded before my daughter's wedding in August but it looks doubtful.  I am diabetic and on several meds that cause weight gain or make loosing hard. I would like to drop 20 to 30 pounds before the wedding.  Has anyone gone on the liquid diet for 2 weeks as a quick "fix"? Any advise?

Hi There

I do think that whatever makes you lose fast, is not good for your body.

But I did read a book from dr Furhman it is called Live to Eat. Basically it is sort of a vegetable diet which promises at least 20 lbs in 6 weeks IF YOU FOLLOW IT STRICTLY

and he also says that his patients cut their diabetes medicins. I suggest if you really want to do it, you read that book and give it a try. I tossed it aside because it was way too strict for me, I am more looking for a way of life now.

If you want it, I am happy to send it to you, if you pay me the shipping costs from here (europe) are around. I think sending it in a air envelope will cost about 7 dollars. Or you could send me something else in return :-)

It is good as new, received it yesterday from amazon, read through it quickly and I see that it is a good program to lose weight etc but not for me

If you do not like his idea, you could consider going on WW till august, that should get you to 15-20 pounds if you follow it for real. EXERCISE will determine if you can lose a lot

GOOD LUCK let me know if you want the book

KM, What a wonderful day to look forward to...your daughter's wedding.  Now I'm going to give the typical disclaimer, please check with your doctor before beginning any type of diet.  With diabetes and the medications you are on, it really is the best course of action.  You might want to consider a dietician.  He/she should be able to give you a healthy eating plan based on your health requirements.   Something to remember, quick fix diets rarely work and you could rebound and gain more weight than you lost.  Also, and I know this due to my own dr's liquid diet I was on before surgery, I did lose 10 lbs in a week, however, I was on a minimal high protein diet.  I was on the diet a total of two weeks, but after the first week stalled.  Since I was on less than 400 calories a day, that totally makes sense.  My poor body was in starvation mode.  Again, I stress I was under the care of a doctor in preparation for my VSG and frankly would never willingly recommend a liquid diet.  It was horrible and I was very weak with absolutely no energy. I wish you luck with whatever you decide works best for you. Melinda

Kitty,  I would like to give a little advice.  Number one, it isn't ALL about fitting into a smaller size.  It is about being healthy.  If you go on a liquid diet, how is that going to affect your diabetes?  Your not going to get the nutrients you need.  I have dropped a large amount of weight very quickly.  I am determined and I want to be healthy.  Being being stupid, wound up in the hospital on Thursday night cuz I was dehydrated because I was pushing myself to far.  I have regrouped.  So, if you want, I can email you what I do.  I have lost 82 lbs since November.  I get in all my dairy, veggies and protein.  Let me know.  I would love to help and I would love to see you lose it AND keep it off AND be healthy about it!!!

I would NOT do a liquid fast if I were diabetic. Ever.  Ask your doc about Byetta - on other boards i read a lot about that.  It helps with weight loss.  past that, eat low carb, just about Atkins style.  Whatever you do, best to check with a diabetic educator first to check for understanding! I also think that dropping 20-30# in two months is a bit ambitious and not likely! Hey, it is what it is.  Enjoy the day - that is the point.

My personal opinion?  Ditch the quick fixes. You'll end up sabotaging yourself in the long run.  You'll F* up your metabolism and make things harder on your band and be less than happy with your success post-WLS.  The liquid diet should only be used before your WLS to shrink the liver and afterward while your stomach is healing.  Outside of that your body needs you to eat healthy meals that promote good digestion and metabolism. My other recommendation goes in line with pretty much what everyone else has said. Go low-carb, high veggie, good meats and starch free or at least cut out all simple/white carbs and replace with whole grains in limited amounts. It has proven results for those with diabetes, insulin resistance and PCOS. (Works for hypothyroid ppl like me too!)

No... not on the liquid.  I am a type II and was on 3 insulins (10 shots a day).  I lost the first 15 lbs doing NO carb (notice I said "NO" carb.. dangerous.. not advised)  in the first two weeks..    I'm more concerned about your diabetes here and the first key is to get it completely under control (in my very humble non-medically educated opinion).  BS control means hunger control... I don't know crap..  but I know this.  DIABETES MAKES YOU HUNGRY (which made me question if banding was right for me).  Dump the carbs = control over the glucose.    In my first few months I lost 50 lbs.. so far I'm down 115 from my worst weight....  it might be worth a look see for quick weight loss with an impending wedding.  My advice would be to read everything about pancreatic disorders, insulin resistence, insulin responses and diabetes that you can get your hands on and take it from there. God bless you and good luck! Congrats on your daughter's upcoming wedding!!!! Lori

Thanks for all the advise. I think that  I am just very down because 2 years ago  I was out of the plus sizes and then I developed a condition that nearly killed me, left me unable to do much exercise for a long time. I started gaining and I mean fast.. I am now a size 26 & at my highest weight ever. I have been looking for a dress for the wedding & can.t find one to fit me. it is too late to order a dress and I am bummed out.

I can imagine.... I feel for you.

But, there is time left. Do something to make your health better. Do ww or low carb or if you want my book just let it know. But do it with a vengance, thinking only of your daughters wedding. Then you will feel better.

Love

Carina
