200 pounds lost in ONE year???
I "guess" it's possible but I can't imagine HOW. I mean I have lost 50 in 4 months but it is also slowing down big time right now. Even weight loss surgery patients have a hard time losing over 150 in a year. I guess my first question would be, "What weight did she start at?" That one thing in itself can be a BIG determining factor. The more you weigh to start, the more you can lose in the beginning so maybe that's how. IDK
Gael, you want me to chime in? LOL.
It's possible, but not for all bodies. Without a doubt, I would bet she was the type eating massive amounts of calories and perhaps this was her first big diet? I bet too that she restricted her calories so low and so if she lost more than 2lbs a week (obviously) she also lost a TON of muscle. That is the sad part of it all to me because of what it could mean for her.
Could I lose fast? No. My insulin resistance made that highly unlikely. Would I want to? No. It's taken me 10 months to lose 50+ pounds (I'm scale free right now so I don't know if I'm at 60 yet). But I have less sag and great tone and I look healthy. I didn't put my body through hell that such weight and muscle loss could be.
My focus remains, lose the weight healthy and permanently. Only way to do that is to do it slow and gain muscle. Unless of course you want to trash your metabolism ; ) and live forever on VLCD.... Not me....
I lost almost 100 (about 97 lbs) in one year, during the first year of losing all my excess weight. I didn't have a trainer or a dietitian/nutritionist, I just worked my butt off...I did 5-7 days on, one day off at first, then I eased that back slowly to 3 days on, one day off. At the same time, I also increased my cardio time to over 1.5 hours (women on average need to workout for at least 30-45 minutes before they stop burning glycogen stores and start burning fat) and I would lift weights EVERY gym day (different muscle groups). I also ate smaller meals and shifted the balance to higher protein and many veggies and fewer carbs (but I always had carbs).
THat said, it was the hardest year of my life, and a year and a half later, I'm still maintaining it (though I'd always love to lose another 10 pounds, I'm comfortable with those 10 slowly coming off now).
I can't imagine losing 200 all alone, but I dont think I ever really believed that I'd lose 100 when I first started, either.
I'm not sure how much age had to do with it...I was 25 then and almost 28 now (gasp!), because in a lot of ways my metabolism feels very ruined by the damage I did to my body by being so overweight for so long. I think what really helped me was the fact that I *had* been in shape at one point in my life, when I was a teen, and so I was able to really visualize the possibility of being back there again (although if you read my bio, you'd see that I thought I was overweight then, too).
Yeah, as has been said, she must have been well over 400#, even more. I think the amazing part is that she did it without WLS.
My office buds who had WLS the exact same day were fascinating to watch. D is 50 yo, woman. A is a 35 yo man. Both had about the same amount to lose, same bmi - around 42ish. D is pear shaped, A is apple.
the first 6 months? D harldy lost any weight at all. A dropped 100 pounds (i think it was 4 months he lost that amount, but i can't swear). A almost got waaay too skinny.
After the first full two years, D is still losing albeit slowly. Of the two, she has lost more weight overall. A is slowly regaining.
Both eat more than I do, so without following them around all day, I'd guess about 1600-1800 cals a day. D eats sweets every day in the breakroom, sometimes twice a day. A drinks like a fish and goes out to lunch pretty much every day. Neither is a ball of fire with exercise during this whole experience. On again off again types.
Shows to go ya that we are all incredibly different.
it is definatly possible to lose alot more than 400lbs in a year, my friend Thomas started at over 420lbs 6 weeks ago and he is already almost down to 350 using the hcg diet. Also check out this guy who lost over 400lbs without surgery

Four and half years ago, David Smith weighed more than 630 pounds. He had spent nearly a decade on the couch in his parents' house eating pizza, raiding the fridge, and drinking soda. For much of his life he said he "felt like the elephant man."
Today Smith is enjoying life and the inspiration he gives others. His remarkable transformation didn't happen overnight. It took more than two years of total dedication; tears of disappointment and grins of glory. Yet his new body is not his greatest gift. It's friendship … something Smith never dreamed he'd know. During the years that he was morbidly obese, he was also imprisoned by shame and social anxiety.
"It got so bad to a point that I didn't leave the house and I didn't even feel comfortable in my own backyard until it was dark out," Smith said.
Ashamed of his looks, Smith didn't want to go out so he wouldn't be mocked in public.
