Hi everybody.  I'm Lyn, 26 and from Ireland.  I found Obesity Help whilst researching WLS.  Have been thinking of having an operation for the past 3 years or so but as there's no WLS in Ireland it means travelling to England or further and self-pay.  I had been looking at the VSG, GB, and RNY forums and was trying to decide which to go for but seems like fate when I saw this board....am really wanting to get the weight off myself.  I am over 300lbs and have been fat since childhood :( so WLS seemed like my only option...but is it?  Ideally I would like to get down to 140lbs but I am not confident in my ability. I went on a liquid diet for 14 weeks and lost 49lbs in 2006, changed my meds and started getting desperately hungry after about 6 weeks.  Cue inevitable cheating, then I felt so bad I decided not to go back to the group.  Ever since my eating has been out of control and I am now 28lbs heavier than before I started but worse than that I haven't been able to stick to a diet since, try as I might. I know it is ultimately up to me what I do and don't put in my mouth.  A LC WOE is best for me as I have type 2 diabetes and PCOS.  So I am thinking of giving it one more shot but no slip-ups this time.  I still have some food-packs left over from previous attempts that I really need to use up as they were so expensive, I am gonna replace breakfast and lunch with a soup/shake.  Or maybe lunch and dinner, I may fare better with breakfast. I look forward to being part of the community.  :)

Hi Lyn! Welcome.  Take a look around at people's blogs and stories.  It CAN be done. You already have much of it worked out. With your issues, yep, it is low carb for you. Do try Atkins, and you should be amazed at how little hunger you experience.  As time goes on, you may be able to or certainly from cravings and desires, you will eat some grains again.  But know that basically eating none to very little will help you. At age 26, it seems pretty gloomy to think of the Rest of Your Life..life life life reverberating in your ears to live "like that". But the sooner you can get your head around that the better.  As Shari has said, it may be that you will hit a wall in your loss as it seems that several morbidly obese folks do...just not be able to lose anymore. But you won't know that til you try and can honestly say you gave it the old college try! WLS may be in the cards for you, too early to tell, and if it ends out that way, at least you will know you did try!  Be sure to read dietgirl's blog - she is a Scot, but it a crack up and a half. She did it without surgery! Welcome!

Hi and thanks for your reply.  My biggest problem foods I need to avoid seem to start with a ch: cheese, chocolate and Chinese food lol.  So I will be avoiding cheese on LC or perhaps I will have some Babybel once in a while which I don't overeat strangely. I don't have the original Atkins book but I bought Atkins Essentials a couple years back which I have read a few times (am great at reading the books, it's putting it all into practice day to day lol).  It's brief outline of the original but states it is no substitute.

you can eat cheese on Atkins! Eating higher fat/protein...the point is you feel more satisfied with less.  Just try it and not worry about how much you are eating for a while.

I do something similar to Atkins...  I think it's good that you're looking into this way of eating.. and I'll explain why I feel this way. I'm a type II... and I was uncontrolled for 8 years or so.  I was ALWAYS HUNGRY.  I could have just eaten a big meal, and 1/2 hour later I was feeling the monster upon me once again.  By sticking to low to no carb and hi protein and fat, my sugar has come way under control, and as a side effect of the sugar coming under control.... I'm no longer hungry.  I mean.... EVER hungry.  If I have that morning meal, I might forget about lunch and around 8:00pm I decide  "ooh.. maybe I should have dinner".  :)  Now.. I'm not saying that's the way to do it.. you should eat frequently during the day.  I'm merely pointing out the difference between always feeling ravenous due to uncontrolled blood sugar and being FREED from hunger my bs management.  Ditch the carbs...watch your sugar go to normal and your hunger go bye-bye! Good luck and God Bless you! Lori 310/205/180
