But Holly, realize that one slice of almost any bread = at least 30g. ONE serving is 15g. So, most single pieces of bread are at least two servings.
one half cup of rice is one serving. HALF the size of your fist. I am in the business and I knwo i did not eat 1/2 c rice my whole life. I feel lucky I did not gain 400# before realizing how important portions are. I know most people at more like 10-12 servings based on what I see!
That is not the pyramid's fault!
Realize that RD's are trained using all these principles. The serving sizes are for an active male. So, if you are a 50 year old fat woman, your portion sizes will look much differnet.

How VERY fascinating that both the USDA AND NIH have declared the pyramid a dismal failure. Hmmm, both of them have worked with the IOM to update the abyssmal failure in 2005.
IOM = That would be the Institute of Medicine - an internationally NON-GOVERNMENT consortium of doctors.
Portion sizes have defninitely always been one of the things I struggle with. Why is it so hard for me? I dunno...it just is...If I force myself to:
1. Read them.
2. Dish them out accordingly.
then I do just fine. It seems so simple, yet I just don't do it....grrrr....
