Catje - your holiday yesterday?

No, May 1 is not for us. The only quasi-holiday May 1 around here is May Day, which as i recall, is actually a Russian independence thing - as kids, we would dance around the maypole on this day! But it is kind of a regional thing, I was raised in middle America, and most schools did it there. I never hear of folks doing it around here.   We also left May baskets on porches - little baskets of flowers and then ring the bell and run off. What is the significance of your May 1?  I bet it is an orthodox religion day. Most Americans went the King James side of the schizm, so they made up their own holidays. Changed Easter, even the Sabbath was moved to Sunday rather than Saturday as the Bible says.  Interesting!

ehm it is a roman catholic holiday: Ascension Day. Ring a bell?

Also, it is Day of the Labor, but that is indeed celebrated in countires like Russia, Cubna dn -strangely enough- Belgium.

We in holland had the day off for Ascension Day, just as we have First and Second easter day, First and Second Christmas Day and, on may 11 ans 12, First and Second Whitsun Day.

Together with Queens day april 30th, that's all for us. We do not have any thanksgiving, liberty day;'s, 4th of july or independance days or such.

it does ring a bell...i do think it is an orthodox-related thing.  My Greek friend just ended up Easter, so Ascension Day May 1 adds up.

Thanks!
