I have a friend who had wls. I have picked her brain and implemented some of her ideas into my developing regime.
I went very low carbohydrate after the diabetes diagnosis in 2005. I learned that protein shakes are a wonderful way to get the protein up and the carbs down if you carefully select the shakes you use. I like the EAS brand, Atkins brand, and a couple of choice flavors from All The Whey (they advertise on OH). Designer Whey protein costs more but has most of the vitamins you need for your body already in it.
I just bought some fiber to add to my shakes. I read that around 30 grams of fiber per day is a good amount to get. It also can help people lose weight and feel satisfied more. I avoided fruits and stuck with the green, lowest carb vegetables available.
For me, the bottom line is what my glucometer says. I must control the glucose levels first. Supplements can make up for what the foods don't give me if I avoid some right now.
No matter how many people you hear from, each of us will have an individual style because the same thing doesn't work for everyone.
One more thing I wanted to mention. For me, it is easier to throw things into a blend and go cup and put it in the blender for breakfast or if I am on the go. It also helped me de-emphasize food for a while as I got into the groove of counting carbohydrates.
I hope this helps.
