Hi Guys

I am looking into high protein low carb lifestyles.
How much protein should a person (without WLS!) eat?
And what are the best sources of it?

I am curious

Greetings
Carina

By the way.. who you callin' a HOE?

I go very low carb...   I try to make sure my fat intake is twice my protein intake...  I gave up on recording grams and percentages a little while back.. I basically wing it out of habit.  I think I would hit between 75 and 120 grams of protein a day.  It depends on how much I can stuff in. Good protein and fat sources for me are: Eggs Chicken roasted with skin Turkey roasted with skin Scallops, shrimp and mussels (but I watch the mussels.. they tend to have higher carbs) Sausage:  Italian sausage, breakfast sausage.. no carb ground sausage that I fry up and throw eggs in. Ground beef.. and not super lean anymore.  I go with the 85/15 to get the fat for me.. but cook for the kids with the more lean ground beef Cheeses are a good source bu****ch the carbs... and some folks can't lose well with too much cheese.  I limit it to 4 oz a day.  My favorite is provolone, if good provolone isn't available, I pick up a block of medium cheddar.  I use romano, mozarella, parmesan... and some shredded cheeses by Kraft. Bacon  (I use no sugar bacon) I love prepackaged turkey like Oscar Meyer.  Recently I found the thick slice that has no carbs.  The shredded has 1 carb per serving.  I get the shredded ham and use that as a snack for Jon or cut up in eggs, or on a bed of spinache for him. The Hillshire farm (or hickory farm) beef summer sausage makes a cool snack  Pork rinds are a protein snack No sugar jello with no sugar whipped cream (or I whip the cream myself and use Splenda to sweeten) is low carb I cook with mostly olive oil.. it just rolls right into what I've always used to that works.  I use coconut oil when I'm not losing..  I'll melt a teaspoon into a cup of coffee and down it!  LOL  I'll also swallow a tablespoon of flax seed oil if I gotta.. BLECH.. but it gets the job done. Oh.. there's a ton more.. I'm sure everyone else will come up with their good protein sources.

hi, You have received a well thought out reply regarding what to eat.  I have done low carb/low fat for almost 3 years now.  The objective is to read labels a lot.  When you are doing low carb you have to determine how low you want to go.  I do low carb but I don't cut out those carbs that are good for you.  Carbs in fruits and yogurts are good carbs, carbs in cookies, cakes and pastries are bad carbs.  You'll figure it out soon enough.  Google low carb diets and get some more information. Good luck! Donna

I don't shoot for any certain percentage. I just try to make sure I get some kind of meat in every meal. When I actually logged my food I was getting about 100 grams of protein. So if you're going to log protein I'd shoot for 90 - 120 grams a day.  That way you're getting plenty of protein in for your muscles.

Hi Carina! I like the "plate visual" that South Beach and The Zone use:  Picture your plate with half covered with veggies (good fat only on it, if at all:  olive oil, canola, small amounts of real butter) 1/4 ish is leaner meats where possible (and this is the hard part - it gets boring just lean pork, beef, chicken, turkey! You can see that "other meats" like sausage, luncheon meats are risky due to sodium and added fats that may be non-natural trans fat) 1/4 ish is or fruit/dairy/beans Later in the plan, the latter part of the 1/4 plate may be ~1/2 cup good grain sources (whole wheat, barley, oats, quinoa) on occasion.  Really, simply stated, less to no grain products at all. Certainly, no white breads, rice, pasta, sugary desserty stuff - all the usual suspects in other words!  NOTE: I do need to clarify:  ALL foods, except alchol, are one of three types:  carbohydrate, fat or protein.   So, in general, fruits, veggies, grains are all considered carbs - not all of them are bad!!!!!  I get a little defensive when people use that term low carb - cuz that tends to cause confusion on what a carb really is and suggest that all carbs are bad!  Low carb in my food plan means actually less grain products - or at least closely monitored amounts!)

Futurelegend: why twice as much fat as protein>?

I must have misinterpreted your original post.. I though you were inquiring about sources of protein.  I don't know a thing about these other things.. SB, WW.. whichever...  If I don't take in enough of fat... I don't lose weight.  That's the short answer.  AGAIN.. EVERYONE PLEASE NOTE THE ME AND I for the kind of routine I'm doing. Personally.. I don't eat fruit so I don't know if the formula I do is reasonable  when those things are included in a diet.    Sorry.. I was just spouting off my protein sources.

do not apologize, I WAS looking for protein recourses. I had no idea where to get protein from.

You have given me a very elaborate answer. I was just curious if there was a reason to your fat-protein intakes

Fat - GOOD fat from vegetable or naturally occuring saturated fat is important to not go too low if you have trouble with feeling satiated.  I think most of us here try to eat moderate, if not high levels of fat.
