Is everyone here doing low-carb? I'm not

Hi guys

As I lurk along here, I get the feeling that you are all doing a low card diet-lifestyle. Is that true?
Just curious how many of you guys are on low carb, and how many on something else

I am doing WW now. I now weight 33 pounds less than 1 yera ago, due to pregnancy (22 pounds) and the WW thereafter (another 10 so far)

I had a serious doubtful weekend, went to a WLS seminar and discussed it all with DH, mum and Dad. Something has to be done, that is clear. I almost thought that the GBP would be my only way out. But I don't feel like i have given it my all... The surgery is SO big and the consquences so grave, that I REALLY want to succed without.

It is like chris said in another post: Before on the many diets, you never realized that you would have to change the way you eat and live FOREVER. Now I do,. Be it with GBP or without, I will have to change my ways either way.

Went to my doctor and we made a deal: I am making an appointment with one of holland's top GBP surgeon's. They have a waiting list of 9 months orso, just for the first consult. In the meantime I try to lose weight by myself. If I succeed I can cancel the surgery appointment, if not...go ahead with it.
Staying fat is not an option anymore, with the 2 youngsters.

I am feeling very anxious to see if I can do it. WW is for me the best program, I could never do low carb (Holland is really a breand and potatoe country)
Just want to learn healthy eating. I will exercise by swimming at first. Will go and see a psychologist to deal with eating problems.
I just HOPE I'll ber able to cancel that appointment!

PS don't know how to make a signtaure!

GBS is a big thing, so I don't blame you for trying to get the best doctor out there.  Trying it on your own and giving it your best shot one more time I think is a fantastic thing to do.  You need to know if you can do this on your own. Plus, learning how to eat correctly will help you out in the long run know matter what you decide to do.

Come and join us more often, I've seen  you post here and there but not very much.  We need to get all these lurkers out of the closet. :)

The most important statement you made:  "But I don't feel like i have given it my all..." It speaks voumes! If you can declare that openly, there is not much to add.  You are young enough that not cutting out too many grains and potatoes still can work.   Portions are the strentgh of WW...I love the program, chances are great that i will do it again. WW does not exclude any food, but they "value" each type of food in such a way that each person realizes that okay, I can have this high point value food item...am I willing to splurge the points to eat it with? Each person becomes aware that she can no longer eat all things in umlimited portions.  As you put it, change forever. You never will be able to eat many things in unhinged amounts. We never could! None of us! You will have to find a way to get more active and do whatever regularly! Yes, i am limiting my bread and potatoes. I guess therefore it is low carb, but i don't feel that way.  i can eat 2-3 true portions of bread every day and lose. I do things like make sandwiches (love them!) with one piece of bread, cut in half. Read labels - when I say true portions I mean 15 grams by weight is ONE portion...that is not much bread by our skewed standards. Most english muffins, even whole grain, are about 50-60 grams.  Your body may tolerate more, again you are young - i am over 50! Try going down to more like 4-5 servings daily and see how it goes. Potaotes are more like a once a week thing, no reason, just trying to eat more other veggies, too.  Your head is in the right place!

I am only low carb in the sense that I try to get more protein than carbohydrates on a daily basis. I also try to make sure those carbs come from fruits and veggies vs bread and potatoes.  Ex: Lunch today was 2 very thin slices turkey lunch meat, 1 piece cheese, and one slice bacon rolled up, another 2 very thin slices turkey lunch meat, and about 20 grapes.  The reason I watch my carb intake is because of cravings. Carbs for me are a trigger food especially processed carbs which I only allow myself about once a week.  WW is a good plan. I have seen it work for many people. Holly is right. It will help you with your eating habits and no matter which path you end up on, you will need those habits but how much easier would post surgery be if you already had that habit established in your life.  Best of luck, hun. I never did low-carb, but I eat very little starchy foods with dinner, and tend to lean more heavily on meats and veggies during that time.  We just had a student visiting our lab from the Netherlands for six months-I can't believe how many breads and potatoes he ate, it was shocking!!  Anyway, what really helped me lose weight was intense and long cardio sessions at first....for the first 3 months all I did when I went to the gym was cardio-and LOTs of it (like 1.5-2 hours).  after losing those initial pounds, I started weight training at the same time...adding about 15-20 minutes of free weights to the end of my cardio.   of course, this only works if you can put in that much time at the gym...i realize lots of people can't...they have kids, or husbands/wives/or lives.  I had none of those things...just school, and a sometimes supportive boyfriend.   Anyway, i'm babbling.  good luck, you can def. do it....

Thanks for the encourgament guys! It is good that SOMEONE out there believes it can be done. I guess everyone around me is waiting for this surgeon's appointment to get it over and done with, because nobody REALLY believs carina can do it this time... They have never seen me succeed before.

Well, this time they will!

And you are right, even IF I end up having the RNY, it is good to have my eating pattern straightened out and alos my head. That is why I am goign to see that psychologist anyway. I will need it in both scenario's.

I promise to post here more often

Have faith in yourself and the rest will fall into place, Carina. I have "dieted" so many times it isn't even funny any more. This time, like you, it was lose it on my own or do the surgery. I do not want the surgery if I don't have to but by fall if this isn't working anymore then surgery is the option I will pursue. So far since January 24th, 2008, I have lost 36 pounds. You CAN do it. My keys to my loss are this: 1)I read on the WLS forums about post-surgery diet. I use alot of what they talk about as my basis: high protein, small portions, multiple meals, water, water, water 2)I exercise. Yesterday was my weekly "challenge day". I exceeded my challenge of 10 miles on the stationary bike by riding 10.5 miles. It took me 3 sessions throughout the day but I did it. Today most likely will only be 3-5 miles. I always aim to do 7 days a week but normally manage 5. 3)I joined a TOPS group for F2F support and accountability. TOPS is a weight loss group like WW but with different concepts, etc. Cheaper, too. 4)I work with my Dr. to make sure I am doing everything I can to achieve my goal.  5) I tell others my accomplishments. It gives me such a boost. I know they see it as bragging or maybe it gets old but I need to hear, "Good job!" or "I am so proud of you." It's what keeps me going.  6)I share with my family because they learn from my example and then when I see them doing what I am doing not because they have to but because it has becomce a learned behavior, I get totally excited because I know I am doing something right for them, too. I hope this helps, Carina. Just remember, you CAN do this. Beth

You might have to copy and paste your ticker and put it in there.  I know a few of us had to do it that way in order for it to work.

I'm not low-carb, I'm just a sugar and starch bigot. :)
