VBLOC Therapy.. Interesting..

http://www.empowerstudy.com Unlike other types of bariatric surgery (laparoscopic banding or gastric bypass,) that alter the stomach’s anatomy, VBLOC Therapy is delivered by an implantable, investigational device intended to block signals carried on the vagus nerve between the brain and the digestive system that control sensations of hunger, satisfaction and fullness.

The device itself uses laparoscopically-implanted electrodes that deliver high-frequency, low-energy electrical impulses to block the signals conveyed through the vagal nerves. By being able to reversibly control these signals, VBLOC Therapy may aid in weight loss.

VBLOC Therapy includes both external and implanted components. VBLOC Therapy may be turned off and is designed to be reversible, programmable and non-invasively adjustable.

Your thoughts??

I think it's possible, if "hunger" is what drives your overeating. Wouldn't work for me.  Plus my vagus nerve's a little hyper. Starts my nose a runnin' after two bites!

I have a bunch of problems. :)  Overeating is just one of them. Might work.. might not.. not sure I would want to be a guinea pig though.

Me either and the ones that do usually have several other problems causing their obesity. Attacking hunger may not be enough just like restriction might not be enough.

This was on the news the other night here locally.  I guess one of the doctors here is taking patients for the study.  I would have done it in a heart beat, but my BMI is too high.  Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm thinking of it like quitting smoking.   The cravings are there, and your having withdrawals.  You also have to do something with your hands, because it's a "habit" that you have to break.  Like with me, I had to clean house nonstop to keep my hands busy.  I don't know, I think it might actually work.  I know if I didn't have any hunger, there is a damn good chance that I wouldn't put that food in my mouth.  It would  just be the habit issue left, and for me I think that would be easier to control than "two" issues to deal with.  Either way I'm really hoping it works, because that could help a lot of people.  I have read some websites that some people are totally against this and I can't figure out why. If it works, it will do a lot of people some good, and save a lot of lives....if it works.

This kinda cracked me up when I 1st heard about it cause a similar device was being investigated years ago for seizure control.  My DD had one implanted, and the copper coil wraps around the vagal nerve in her neck ( the wire isn't removable).  The actual device was implanted under the muscle near the collarbone.  We had a magnet thingy to turn it to a different "speed" when a gran-mal would happen....Long story, it didn't work well, and she couldn't tolerate the device inside (painful she said).  After that they were using it for Parkinsons, which I hear does work, so thats cool.  Hey if it works for fat folks all the better.  Hopefully its not going to be an expensive WLS!
