Hey peeps! Can I have your thoughts on calories eaten vs calories burned.  I overate today.. I know that... but I also did 45 minutes of cardio to warm up... then an hour of anaerobic weights (supersets.. lots of sweating.. heart rate up), then another 30 minutes of cardio to poli**** off. How worried should I be about the overeating?  I'm guessing I'm close to 2000 calories... maybe 1800...   Tell me how you figure it for yourself... (help me feel better about mowwing down)  LOLOLOL Thanks! Lori

Hi Lori, Okay I bought yet another "diet" book.  This one is called the KISS series,  Keep It Simple Series.  Now I know about 98% of the stuff in the book so that makes me feel good.  But I am always one to learn.  Since it was like $2.50 at Borders I figured what the heck.  This part is what I figured would help you out. "If you want to maintain your weight you must take in neither more nor fewer calories than your body needs to maintain basic metabolism and to fuel any additional activity.  If you want to lose weight then you must take in fewer calories than is needed.  You will lose 1 pound for every 3500 calories you are in debt to your body.  If your daily intake is 35 calories less than your output, it will take 100 days for you to lose that pound.  Reduce your intake by 350 calories or increase your output by 350 calories and you will lose that pound in 10 days. To figure out your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate)  Take your rate in pounds x 10 and that equals your BMR Calculate your lifestyle percentage and multipy by that number:  Sedentary 20%, Somewhat active 30%, Moderately active 40% and Very active 50%.   Here is a quiz to figure out how active you are.  (I know this confuses a lot of people when they try to figure it out) Do you engage in regularly scheduled exercise?  1 point for yes, 0 points for no If so, how long is each exercise session:  1 point for 15 minutes, 2 points for 30 minutes, 3 points for 45 minute, 4 points for one hour and 5 points for more than one hour. How many times a week:  1 point for 1 day, 2 points for 2 days, 3 points for 3 days, 4 points for 4 days, etc. Do you exert yourself physicall during the course of normal activities or around the house?  1 point for yes, 0 points for no. Add up the numbers. 0-3 points - sedentary 4-5 points - somewhat active 6-8 points - moderately active 9 points or more - very active So, for me.....I come in at very active, my points were 11.

230 pounds x 10 = 2,300 BMR       2300 x 50% = 3450  I should be eating somewhere in the vicinity of 2950 calories a day to lose weight.  Now, I fight that in my head, honestly.  But I might have to really pay it some credence.  Not sure how I'd consume that much food, but that's the numbers. I hope all that blah blah blah helped you out a bit!! Donna

Lots of good info here, Donna.  Shari was telling me about a test which measures BMR more accurately..  but I haven't found a place yet.  For NOW though, FITDAY calls my bmr @ 1718 basil and 722 lifestyle... but lemme run through what you have here... I find this QUITE interesting. 225 x 10 = 2250 Engage in regularly scheduled exercise?  1 How long is each exercise session:  This is confusing.   3 days a week I do  more than an hour... 2 or 3 more days I do an hour.  I'm going to guess high on this one at 5. How many times a week?  I do at LEAST 5 days.  So that's 5 I do exert myself physically during the course of normal activies.... cleaning.. laundry.. cutting firewood, cleaning the yard.. etc.  So that's 1

That's 12 total.  I guess this is very active?  (But I don't work outside the house).

2250 x 50%?  Is that the formula for active?  = 3375?  That's a heck of a lot.

I tend to gain at such a low intake that it's kinda scary to even imagine what those numbers would do to me.

Figure.... an hour of cardio and an hour of weights today.. must have burned at LEAST 400 cal so although I ate my way through the early evening to roughly 1800 - 2000 cal.. less about 400 working out.. should prevent me from GAINING at least.. right?

Thank you for this information.  It gave me something to think about.   I REALLY wanna find a place to have that test Shari told me about... it's definitely worth every penny.  I just know that we all have to be different and I just don't know how much to trust some of the standard formulas.... where does it take into account our own personal metabolism? Thank again! Lori

you are welcome!  I am actually contemplating a dietician.  There is just so much out there I am missing. Two issues I am having.  Same as you, screw the BMR because I gain at like 2000 calories.  I have been this active since October of 2005 and believe me I will gain at 2000.  So that whole idea of being able to consume almost 3000 scares the bejesus out of me.

The other issue is one of how wheat products bloat the hell out of me.  Now, not ALL wheat products.  I can do whole grain bread, I can do whole grain pasta, in small quantities of course.  But a bowl of Kelloggs Cinnamon and Pecan at 120 calories for 3/4 cup bloats me up like a blowfish. Arrrrgggghhhh will we ever figure it out????????

I don't know, perhaps?  I have never had problems with sugar in any form that I know of. Hence, the dietician.  Who knows, someone has to take all my hard earned money and I can't find a personal trainer in my neck of the woods.  LOL

Donna..just something to think about..... My daughter is not a diabetic, but it's obvious she is insulin resistent.  No, this isn't an official diagnosis (and I get her checked for diabetes every six months because it's a family trait), but I can see the ring starting around her neck and if she over indulges in bread (which could be normal by someone else's standards) she begins to gain weight rapidly.... same with pasta so I give her pasta as a "treat" rather than as a staple like what I ate when growing up. I also see insulin resistence in my nephew/Godson.... he's getting chunky and can't understand why.  He climbs communication towers for a living... so that's every day doing a 4 hour climb up and a 4 hour climb down.  He's VERY active.. (he's such a great little homeowner..does all his own renovations... takes care of his own property).. he's ALWAYS on the move... yet those mashed potatoes are showing up in his middle where they have no business showing with his activity level.  Again, he was raised on pasta and his Polish wife makes killer perogies.... he's just too sensitive. I don't believe that our "sensitivities" can be diagnosed.  I look at it more like an "allergy" to certain foods.....and as many folks have stated in previous posts.....a sensitivity to grains is quite common. As far as a personal trainer is concerned... PHOOEY... you are young and healthy and there's so much you can do with resistence bands, a ball and modest weight rack... You are a very motivated person to be where you are so I don't feel like you're the type who needs to pay someone to push you.  When I'm at the point where I'm confident about doing things without needing the help of a trainer, I'll be doing the same.. using resistence bands to work my legs, a ball for abs and light weights to tone arms, back and lats.  :)   The best part is that those bands can travel with you!!   I'm no where near the success you've achieved...I'm still experimenting..but spent a lifetime on various fitness techniques and I see you as an individual who can "train" without having to destroy your wallet!!  :)  :) God Bless you honey!! Hi Lori, thank you for all that information.  You know, I used to think I was nuts.  When I was 13 years old I went to Florida with my family.  I am 100% Italian and my uncle owned an Italian restaurant down there so all we ate for the entire week was italian food.  I swear to god and I will go to my grave saying this, those carbs made me fat.  I was a small child, skinny even.  When I got back from that tip there was almost nothing I could do and there the pattern started.  I struggled with it from that point on.  I didn't become super morbidly obese until after my children were born but I don't blame my weight on them at all. I  KNOW that I am sensitive to carbs.  And I realize what you are saying about not being able to diagnosis it medically, which sucks.  But as you have said, we are all smart enough to realize how things affect our bodies.  I can eat wheat pasta and whole grain breads in extreme moderation.  But give me a bowl of cereal, not even the sugary good kind, LOL, and I blow up like a Macys Thanksgiving Day balloon.  It is actually visible how my body swells.  I'm thinking it is actually a combination of the milk and cereal that does it.  Also, with me, any kinds of sweets makes me ill.  Like if I choose to eat say cookies for breakfast I immediately swell, get a stomach ache AND heartburn.  I also stay perpetually uncomfortable for the whole day, not even hungry.  But I eat in order to undo the icky feeling, which never works.  **** I think we are so in touch with our bodies that we should be paying ourselves to diagosis us.  LOL As far as the trainer goes my son said the same thing.  He said that I could do the training on my own.  I just wish i had a way to "fix" it all so I didn't do all this work all the time!!  Blah, we are never happy, are we?? you are doing fantastic by the way.  Stop beating yourself up.  You KNOW you need to eat and if you are working out so steadily don't pay attention to those "gains"  because you know them for what they are, fluctuations.   Hey, listen to me.  I act like I don't do the same thing!!!

Lori... my gawd you work horse.  You burned at least 500 calories at a minimum though it seems more like 800-1000.  Quit worrying!

hell if I know! Try a few things, when it doesn't work anymore do something else. I've done it all...eaten good whole food balanced without counting calories...gained cut severely...which worked as long as I actually did it...gained b/c can't do it too long i found my groove, but what I eat must count - i cannot eat more than 1800 cals if I want to lose. i KNOW I lose at 1400 and can tolerate a couple 1800-2000 days, so that is the "lose" range.
