I'm putting money down that Chris will lose 9lbs during Induction. What do you think, Chris?  Are you weighing yourself every week?  Can't wait.  When you lose, I just can't wait to hear you go nuts with glee. I am very happy for you because you sound content.  That's so important, isn't it? I like that you feel as I do, FREE.  And when you start to feel confident that it will continue, you will feel even more free. I realized I will be 230 this year most likely.  230--That will be 90 down.  OMG. Do your math.  If you lose 2/lb a week, 8lb/month, by Christmas, that will be over 75lbs.  Can you live with that?  Chris, 220lbs? Then just live like this.  That's why it's a WOE, way of eating.

G'lord that's a lot of weight!  I'd love to lose that much though.  I weight at home every week..hell I weigh everday. So far, no loss but it's only been 2 days.  Yes, I cannot stand stressing over the amount of food I'm eating. The Atkins diet/WOE allows me to be stress free when it comes to food. I have spent so much time looking at fat content, calories, sugar, and even carbs that I grow weary.  Atkins gives me some freedom in that area.  We'll see how this goes! :P If I can get down to a healthy 220lbs then I probably will be thinking very heavily about my decision to have the DS. :)

Ketosis simply means that the body is burning fat for energy....  whether it be the fat in the food you just ate or stores from fat cells.  In the absence of carbs, your body will use fat to keep you fueled.  One ketone, acetone, cannot be utilized by the body and it's excreted in the urine, breath, through skin pores.  These are the ones which are detectable hence allowing us to measure the degree to which the body is using fat for energy.  Ketones are the preferable energy source for the heart and kidneys.  The brain will use them to some degree as well. In the absence of carbohydrates, the liver will turn protein to glucose so your brain and other organs which prefer glucose will get plenty.  Because this happens slowly, it doesn't cause an insulin response or spike blood sugar.

Excellent explanation! That's exactly how I thought it worked.  I suspect my body is burning the fat that I've eaten at this point and not the stored body fat.  I'm still learning how to eat until satisfied. Yesterday I ate past the point of satisfaction because the amount of food I had seemed like a "normal" portion size to me.  I have to get to the point where I realize that eating like this doesn't require as much food, volume wise.

Well I, like Holly, am gonna be tracking your progress, Chris...LOL.  I did a lot of reading last night about Atkins/cholesterol and like you say....it states it does lower the triglycerides (which I'm most concerned about).  Was on some sites too where people had blood work done three months later and showed improvement....encouraging! We know it's working for Jers....but Jers, you're working out far harder than I ever will be able to and interested to see how Chris does.  Hey Chris, you might get so much energy you'll become a "gym rat" like Jers too!  Then who will I have to compare to?   LOL Have to look up good potassium sources for the diet too....I really depend on my fruits for potassium, as I need it to regulate an arrythmia that sometimes gives me problems.  I can't imagine giving up my fruits....but heck....maybe they're part of my problem. I'm so confused right now....have had a bad week with Core and don't know which road to follow.  I really think I might be one of those that if I can't have a "treat" once in a while, I will have a binge and blow it all.  Maybe I'm not giving myself enough credit.  I did something similar for 5 months and lost 70lb, but knew it was not something I could continue for life. Just keep up the good work and I'm sure you'll have excellent results.  The eyes of the world (well, at least this board) are watching and wishing you well!!

Sherrie... just wanted to mention that my triglycerides were off the chart in the 670's in July.  At last blood study in January, they were 235 <-- still high.. but as you can see they came down TREMENDOUSLY.  I'm looking forward to see where they will be in June.

My doc rx'd potassium for me years ago.. and I take it daily.  I also hit C, E, magnesium, chromium picolinate, cinnamon and fish oil.

I hated giving up fruit as well... my tongue was hanging out looking at the strawberries in Wallyworld last night... but... c'est la vie.  I want the weight loss MORE than the strawberries!  LOLOL

Thanks....all that is very encouraging!!  Want to really become well informed about this, cause if I give it a try I want to do it 100% and the right way (and be able to be informed to counter my doctor's attack, which I expect).  He doesn't believe you should have any fat in your diet!!  Guess that gives me a lot of confidence in him!!  I know I can take potassium supplements....just not one for pills if I can get it through my diet instead.  Maybe I can make him a believer!!

Want me to do a back dive into the sea of fat for ya!?    I got a lot of people watching me now! I definitely gotta make sure I stick to this!  As I was eating my sausage and bacon between two egg patties sandwich this morning I was thinking about how much I love eating like this. God it sure is tasty! :P If it doesn't work for me I'm really gonna have a super hard time giving up all this yummy food! :D I'm not sure how much exercise you are getting but wanted to let you know what I'm currently doing so you can compare.  I currently walk a 3/4 mile a day. That's in two sessions, morning and evening. I walk at a casual pace, not a strenuous pace. I estimate about 2mph. Sometimes I pick it up a bit but for the most part my legs are usually quite sore and stiff from the karate I do.  I take a karate class twice a wee for one hour.  I would estimate my heartbeat is raised for a total of 20-30 minutes during those sessions. Outside of that I *sometimes* go hiking on the weekends but I haven't done that in a couple of weeks. I plan to do so whenever it finally decides to get to 70 degrees. I have a difficult time bearing the cold. I've learned that could be due in part to my thyroid. Which brings up another issue. I have a thyroid disorder. That in itself will raise my cholesterol however my cholesterol is only borderline. It also makes it difficult for me to lose weight.

Hint:  not everyone throws ketones.  I did on the first day.. but I was already cutting out most carbs to begin with.  Jon did a few times at about the 14 day mark.. but never did after that.  He started at about 200 lbs and is down to 167 right now.. no hunger.. no discomfort and for 61 years old.. he puts them young puppies to shame runnin' around at work.  LOTS of energy to be had with this way of eating. also... he doesn't work out or exercise... just normal everyday activities.

So you know, I believe there is a little carb in the creamer and equal. Brenda
