questions about Atkins....

Hi Sherrie!  Just wanted to poke my head in here and say that being fat also aggravates cholo and triglycerides (sic)! So there is that. Cholesterol problems at a point are not even about food intake; that is proven that one can only bring points down by a bit.  NOT to say that eating healthier foods is still not important! Atkins is worth a try...if a person suffers from hunger issues, it is amazing for that.  After the induction piece, it is more like "reasonable" eating. The bottom line lesson?  We (fellow fat peeps) cannot tolerate many grains; Dr. Atkins refers to it as a chronic condition/disability also - the second we take in too many grains, our bodies respons in a way that results in insulin and fat stores! Which is where I landed after all that anyway. I could not let myself eat the full fat sour cream, milk and stayed away from butter and other trans fatty foods where possible - instead used canola or olive oil. I tried to cut saturated fat where possible while doing Atkins...still, my sat fat intake was like 25% - SCARY. In my case, it is heart disease/stroke concerns. As Kriz has found, the sodium can be off the charts as well if one does not monitor that part - the tendency to eat packaged meats is huge for the convenience.  Like we said 'round here lately, one has to prep and plan, just like with all other food plans! Try to stick to chicken, lean meats, good fats in induction.  That is my best advice for you! You will still feel okay.  And...when eating out, just eat grain free, low to no sugar as is possible - no way will you be able to watch the saturated fats and marbled meats there. mexican/chinese restaurants are about impossible to eat at, but all other American stuff is do-able.

Thanks, Neecee.  Still haven't determined if I'm gonna give it a try or not.  Want to get the book and read it first.  At the moment, just trying to do low carb with the Core program...but had a bit of a set back with GS cookies this week!   EEK!  They were even in the freezer....but calling my name!
