Confused and frustrated

Okay....got back last night from 5 days in KY seeing my new granddaughter again....too cute and needed my baby fix.  I weighed 271 when I left last Thursday morning and weighed 275.5 this morning.  How can it take a month for me to lose 4 lbs and 4 days to gain it all back plus more?  WTF?  Needless to say, I wasn't sticking to my points and hit some fast food on the way home to save time.  Let's face it....I know where the extra pounds came from. Today I had my appt. with my primary.  My lab work was:  (normal values) A1C    6.1   (4-6) Glucose    117   (60-99) Total cholesterol   183  (120-199) HDL    39    (>40) Triglycerides     184   (<150) LDL       107   (<100)   my doctor wants it <70 So...he suggested Metformin or Lap Band.   I don't want either option at this point.  I'm not a pill taker and already on something for BP (mine was 110/60) and cholesterol  (Zocor 20mg).  He also wanted to up my Zocor to 40mg.  I told him I would rather approach this with healthy food choices and exercise.  We compromised on 30mg of Zocor.  He would freak if I mentioned Atkins....wants me to have NO cheese or red meat whatsoever and would rather I exist on a vegetarian diet with chicken 1-2 times/week and fish 2 times/week. I don't know what to do at this point.....thinking of making an appt. with an endocrinologist/nut.  I know I have to do low carb...I'm very sensitive to carbs.  WW....flex or core?  May just go back to what really worked for me a few years ago...no flour, sugar....oat bran, plain yogurt and fruit for breakfast, veggies and lean turkey/chicken or tuna for lunch and more veggies/salad/lean meat for dinner.  May just do that and add some FF milk or 1% cottage cheese and maybe another fruit. Need to get some weight off quickly and my glucose levels down and get moving!!  Not doing any real exercise now and just have to force myself.   Just so sick of all of this....sorry to be so negative.

EGAD.. I don't blame you re: the metformin..  nasty side effects... ewwwwwwwwwww! Some docs are hell bent set on vegetarian diets.. others (like my pcp) suggested a protein diet years ago...  yet the endo said "LOW FAT>> LOW FAT". I think it's important to know what works for YOUR BODY.. not someone else's.  If you know you're carb sensitive... and you were doing something previously that really seemed to work.. Amen, woman.. get on it... yanno?  The only one living with YOUR body is YOU.    Also.. you don't mention if you know you are exercise sensitive or not.   One thing I do know.. doctors are taking a more aggressive approach at treating diabetes these days.. so yeah... someone is gonna be pushing the meds somewhere.

Hi Sherrie,

My gynecologist said the same about wanting me to do the procedure.  Then my primary doctor wants me to go on the diet HE used, which sounds a lot like your doctor.  It sounds like you know what you need to do,, and want to do!  Do core with me, from what your describing your diet that works for you...Core would fit into it.  Look into the book and see if it's something you would like.  Like you, carbs are an issue, and processed stuff is out!  It's so hard, I love the stuff.  But, one day at a time!  I also have high cholestrol and are on pills for it.  Last time I did my tests they wasn't happy with the results, but they don't want to up my prescription.   That's another reason why I think this diet is best for me.

Get back on track and do what needs to be done.  You were on a trip, don't be so hard on a few pound gained!  (I also agree.....hate how fast those lil buggers sneak up on ya!)

Welcome back.

The way I see it you have a couple options: 1. Do a low carb diet like Atkins.  It's not unhealthy. I think you already know that. You'll gradually introduce your carbs again for balance.  It'll help get your A1c and glucose back in check. It'll help you to lose the weight and in my opinion is quite similar to WW core when you've made it to phase 2 to phase 3 (maintenance). 2. Go for WLS. I wouldn't recommend the lapband for dealing with diabetes. Instead I would go for the roux en y or the duodenal switch.  The weight loss in addition to the malabsorptive effects of the RNY will help to put your symptoms into remission. The DS could cure those symptoms over night. There is a new procedure called Vergito that could possibly cure diabetes without the malabsorption factor. It's brand new and there isn't much info on it. The only doctor I know that's doing that procedure is Dr. Husted in California. If you really don't want to have WLS then your only option is to go low-carb.  You already said you know it works. Personally, I don't feel like most physicians are informed enough about diabetes, insulin resistance and all those other pancreas related illnesses.  They went to med school and were taught low fat, lean meats, no red meats, veggies and starches to get the labs back in their correct ranges.  I imagine very few of them have lifted two fingers since school to do any research into insulin resistance/diabetes. They buy into the low-fat hype and shun low-carb without really doing any research for themselves.

Oh man, we all get that down on all this. I thought your plan from a few years ago sounds great - go there, if that worked. Sometimes we need to get back onto what did work - usually the reason we re-gained is we stopped whatever we were doing.  As for the spike in weight over a few days, no way did you eat 4 x 3500 cals, right? That is surely water weight, maybe one pound, maybe is actual gain. It is hard with our overweight bodies to really tell - we seem to retain water very easily.

Doctors have very little nutrition training - do you know that? RD's are the only trusted source. Better yet, bariatric doctors are gaining respect for folks like us who don't respond well to conventional food plans. The endocrinologist is not a bad idea - if for nothing else but to rule things out or better yet - find a reason. Do you know how your doc feels about Byetta?  it is for diabetics and helps drop weight. Again, your food plan you loosely described sounds great - balanced and healthy, a lot like core for ww. DEW IT! And moving more every day will help the LDL and the blood sugar - even 30 minutes walk a day will do wonders. Pick up your mood, too.

Thanks guys for all the support and encouraging words.  I guess we all get down on ourselves a little too quickly.  I know the gain is mostly water...my rings are tight.  Unfortunately, I took it as permission to make poor choices again yesterday, but am BACK ON TRACK TODAY!! Holly...gonna give Core a try with you.  My old plan fits into it nicely and I do think the processed foods and white flour and sugar is my problem.  My doctor's giving me three months to get my act together and gonna make an honest effort here.  I keep using my knee as an excuse for lack of exercise too, but I do have an exercise bike here and need to get on it!! Well, re-energized and motivated AGAIN!!
