What's wrong with this scenerio

The school district just makes me so upset. First you guys know that one of my kids is ten years old and weighs 140 pounds.

Last year there was some kind of event that they were giving the kids tickets for presents for bringing in fruit juice with their lunch. Now, I know some kids this is alright with because they don't get in their fruit. But in my house I have made a no fruit juice rule because they just can't drink the right amount of it, thus increase their sugar and gain weight. I would MUCH rather pack my kids fruit and have them eat the raw wholesome food that it's intended to be. So I got on the phone with the nurse and had it with her last year. Emailed, even involved teachers, principles, you got the picture. They just made me mad, especially once the nurse even agreed with me but she just kept at it.

Now today the kids want me to take them to McDonald's tonight. The teachers are going to be serving! This is the same school where we can't bring cupcakes on birthdays anymore because it's too fattening and it's not good for us. It's the school where they would rather see drink juice instead of milk. They say it's a fun raiser, but aren't they going against everything they are preaching? They just seem that if it will benefit them in anyway it's alright.

I'm trying to figure out if I should let this go and take the kids or stick firm with what I believe in and teach the kids these values. First of all my son keeps gaining, just four more pounds to 144 just recently. This just burns me. Why couldn't they do subway???

ARGGHH!!!

I say stick to your guns!! Tell the kids hey mcdonalds isn't healthy for you lets go to subway instead. Its funny that they were wanting to go to mcdonalds because my husband was wanting that tonight and i REALLY didnt want to go and eat that. I am trying to get away from all the fast food crap!! Its nothing but JUNK!! So for the health of you and your family stick to your guns and maybe one day your kids will understand.

lol here I just posted I was giving up and going.  I haven't told them yes or no yet.  I think my son already knows he will be eating healthy if we go.  I hate not taking them places because then they won't learn how to eat properly either. That is what I'm wondering what my problem was when I first left home.  I went crazy over fast food because we never even ate it!    It's almost a no win situation.  But it just irks me that the school did this.  After all that they have been saying this year.  Anyway to get money for the school I guess?!?!?!  Bahh, I just think it's totally wrong. So if we go the kids will get a small meal with apples.  Maybe a side salad since my son has such a big appetite.  He's just learning that he actually likes salads, maybe this will get him to start asking for it when we go out.

L ol, still erks me!

in Cali, the Well baby clinics now advise mothers to water down juice - exactly what you are saying! Kids will drink an untold amount of juice, it's sweet, and you are right...has lots of calories without the benefit of the fiber.  Schools have got to get this right soon...you are dead right. Food should never be a reward, but it still is because it's easy... and cheap.  Wonder why the teachers did not offer to make spagetti or do a veggie dish and then serve it...oh yeah...mcD's is easier.......

I'm laughing, but not at you!  School lunches are pure garbage in most parts of this country and McDonald's has a very LOOONG arm when it comes to fundraising for schools. My son's school doesn't allow sodas in lunches, but the milk they offer has high fructose corn syrup as the 2nd ingredient in 1% milk (they have "nutritious" strawberry and chocolate flavors to choose from)...just about everything is made to look "fried" even though it can't be (what kinda message is that?)...and breakfast almost always consists of some sugary, dessert-like contraptions (cinnamon rolls, french toast sticks, pancake-battered sausages with specks of "syrup solids", WTH?).  With the exception of "pizza days", my son takes lunch every day as a result. As far as McDonald's, I have learned that they will willingly "donate" a substantial amount of money in exchange for these nights.  In addition, many local McDonald's regularly finance things like report card envelopes, staff lunches, and non-food incentives and/or donations to schools in exchange for "rights" to a certain number of fundraisers.   For so many financially-strapped schools and entire systems, it seems like a win-win situation.  McDonald's execs are no fools...a branded generation is more valuable than giving up a few nights of profits to schools around the country! I said all that to say this...stick to your guns!!  Nothing wrong with going, just let them know what their choices are, just like anything else.  As far as your son's weight issue, the best thing you can teach your kids is moderation.  Nothing wrong with juice, but buy the little 4.23oz 100% juices and get him a large, refillable water bottle to take as well.  Getting him involved in cooking treats he likes is also another way to not only connect, but for you to control ingredients...my son actually prefers his "own"!  I find that the less I rely on processed foods or foods I don't otherwise prepare, the less resistance I have overall.

My daughters, ages 15 and 18, have just realized how crappy school lunches really are. The refuse to eat at school and will pack their own lunches even if it is just peanut butter and jelly and a piece of fruit. According to my oldest peanut butter and jelly is still healthier than what the school serves on a daily basis. I agree totally with her. I'm glad they are taking such an active role in their nutrition. **We use natural peanut butter (peanuts, salt) and low cal 100% multi grain or wheat bread. Regular jelly but they don't use alot of it.

My friends daughter was consuming too much juice and the dentist said to cut some of it out and water it down.  Obviously, it was doing a number on her teeth. Brenda

Count yourself lucky, my two teenagers hardly even eat fruit anymore, less vegetables.  I take it back, my son occasionally eats a bowl of salad.  I try to talk to them about it.  My 18 year old is pretty gone at this stage, he's in the stage where he's not talking to mom much these days. He's barely even home most of the time.  But my 16 year old..it's like talking to a brick wall.  While I talk to her about portions, ect., she gets the biggest bowl in the house and fills it with something.  She just rolls her eyes at me most of the time and tells me she's not me.  She's got my genes so she's got a big surprise coming!  She just won't listen.
