Insulin resistance and diabetes (type 2)

I was just wondering how many of us are dealing with these diagnosis or who are suspicious that it might be one of the issues you are dealing with. Before my diagnosis in 2005, I really didn't understand or know very much about it.  Now I feel it is a vital key that I have been missing for many years.  I have always lost weight on the low carb diets.  Other methods never seemed to work for me. Once I was diagnosed, it was a major nutritional breakthrough for me.  I already knew about hypothyroidism and the impact it has with metabolism when I was diagnosed at 18.   Also I wonder what other factors might be out there that we may need to learn more about.

www.womentowomen.com     This site is full of information about an hollistic approach to hormonal therapy.  My endo recommended the vitamins program which I was on for a while until they couldn't deliver them after Katrina, so I bought them separately on my own.  They have all kinds of information on the things you are concerned about. Some of it, in my opinion, is a little too strict, but they give a great scientific basis for why you need to change what needs changing. Mary

I have not been formally charged with IR or prediabetes, but i have the profiles:  apple shaped, hard to lose weight, gestational pre-diabetes. I've know all my life I had to work much harder than anyone else to lose! I have done very well the past 10 years...before that I was still struggling with binging too often.  I know deep in my heart that obesity will be a thing of the past one of these days as all this gets unlocked and doctors and RD's know how to treat it.

I know how you feel.  I have always had to work much harder to lose weight. I bet that even binging will prove to be related with nutritional and medical issues as they continue to do research and learn more about it.

I'm formerly insulin dependent Type II DM... my nutritional breakthrough has only come within the last 6 months or so...  I'm no longer insulin dependent.

That is great! Do you still use other medication for diabetes?   My doctor told me I can probably get off the metformin and the Byetta when I lose more weight.  That really sounds good to me. How is your energy level now? It would have been great if I had known about all of the dietary and medical factors that I am learning about now.

I began with the half measures years ago.. metformin, glucophage, then glucophage with avandia.. then upping the dosages... then finally to novolog and lantus.. then added symlin.  My numbers never went down.

I don't take anything now.  My energy level is higher than it's been since I was a kid for the most part I'm go go go...  (not at the moment, but we all have our bad days).   The thing is to do something before the damage is permanent.  I've got SOME permanent damage, but I don't think it's going to get worse if I stay on my eating plan.

I was lucky that my doctor checked it.  He said it was steroid induced.  He caught it early and no damage was done.  I had been gaining weight for months before the diagnosis.  Too bad it doesn't go away as easily.  I was exhausted all of the time too.  I had more energy with the weight loss and with my body responding better to the carbs. The eating plan really does help. I assume that diabetes runs in your family since it is so hard to control.

I kinda think anyone who has it has a genetic predisposition to it anyway.  All uncles passed away in 20's and 30's with complications of type I.  Father passed at 42 with complications of type I.  Brother at 53 with complications of type II.....    me getting it was inevitable.. no suprise here.. it's just a b*tch to cotnrol sometimes.
