Is "Light" really Light?

Eww!!  Haven't sampled the cardboard yet!  I really like the nature's own bread and it's pretty healthy for the most part.  It's really hard to avoid HFCS in today's society so I will just make sure I make as many choices as I can that don't have it and the ones I have to take, like bread, I'll pick the ones I like the best.

I normally don't eat yogurt.  But I need to eat something with the live culture bacteria right now.  Antibiotics wiped me out. Is there something out there that doesn't taste too sweet?  I agree that even the artificially sweetened yogurts taste too sweet for me.  I hadn't thought about adding protein powder to it.  For now, maybe it can substitute for a shake or even be mixed in with one.  Hmmmm....

Here in Australia the term 'light' in foods can be very misleading and loaded. For example...

Light can refer to the flavour

Light can refer to the colour

Light can refer to the weight

Basically any sneaky manufacturer uses words like 'light' to trick unsuspecting folks into buying their rubbish.

Then, there's 98% fat free goodies... well yeah, but how do they make up the taste? SUGAR! I go by how many calories, grams of fat, sugar, carbs and sodium in 100g to compare foods,

As far as yoghurt goes, I like fat free Jalna (berry or natural) for the real yoghurt taste and it seems to have a decent balance nutritionally. Not to mention in doesn't contain artificial sweeteners. Plus it has all those good bacteria. Do they have Jalna in the US?

I've never seen Jalna yet. I'm sure we probably have some yogurt that doesn't have any sweetener added to it but it will be on the bottom shelf in the farthest corner. Everything in America is laden with sugar and sugar alternatives. It's pathetic. You'd think that food manufacturers would have morals...but perhaps they're just as misinformed as many others are.

Labeling is still just marketing.  Light can be "lighter" than  the full version, but that doesn't mean good for you. Frankly, I've given up light in my diet altogether.  On Atkins, I have heavy cream, sour cream, full fat cheese, full 4% cottage cheese, cream cheese, butter, stuff that I used to think you had to avoid or have only the light version of.  Now, granted I'm not eating a ton of this stuff, even when in a recipe it's really portion appropriate, but I do find a difference.  You know the deal--when fat is taken out, sugar is put in.  And eating more fat in my diet--I feel sane, see results, and feel normal in my skin.  Plus, it makes everything else taste so good. BTW, I'm in my last week of induction.  I am planning a "sweet" when it ends and have a great low carb recipe for cheese cake.  Ahhhh, this is dieting, LOL.  Hey, if it peels the pounds off, by all means. And for those who say eating this stuff is bad for you--I will be checking my blood work in May to evaluate the difference between October (30/40/40) and May (70/20/10).  I am hoping like most experience on Atkins, the result will be even better glucose and good (already good) cholesterol.  Anyway, right now it's just imperative to get the pounds off.

I'm slowly reading the book!  (Notice my dwindled faith in low fat!) I'm scheduled to see the nutritionist again on the 28th. It's then when I have my official weigh in.  If I haven't had the results I desire then I may be joining ya!  It's good that you started ahead of me though.  Because I can pummel you with questions on how you made it through induction. :)

I think sometimes you have to challenge popular thought and determine stuff for yourself.  People are influenced by what they're taught, not necessarily by what is real and effective.  Even medical studies can prove slanted merely by the agenda of what's trying to be proven. So, though a fair amount of people can say that the way to lose weight is by low cal, low fat, I say, hmmm, where'd you get your information.  The FDA?  Hmm, corporate driven government?  Hmmm.  I prefer to figure things out for myself--how do I feel doing something, what results am I seeing...  And on this lowcarb board I go to there are a ton of people who are or have lost massive amounts of weight, like 100lbs, eating substantially and high fat with their BPs, BGs, and cholesterol going down.  So, obviously, I don't take much stock in the forcefed mantra of low fat/low cal.
