Water?

Bob Greene was on Oprah recently and said we should be drinking six (8 oz.) glasses of water a day.  Oprah told him she was drinking 8 (8 oz.) a day and he said that was too much.   I've always heard you should drink at least 8 glasses a day. A relative of a friend of mine went to the hospital the other day and they told her she was drinking too much water.  She said she only drinks about 4 bottled waters a day.  I'm guessing around 32 ozs. This lady is a pretty healthy person too. What do you think the truth is for an average person? Brenda

I think 50-64 ounces a day is plenty sufficient for the average person. I tend to think 24 ounces is not enough but I guess it depends on how much that person moves and what they eat. I usually go by how thirsty I am.  I don't force my water down. If I'm thirsty I drink water and nothing else. If I'm not thirsty then I just don't drink. Yesterday I drank five 20 ounce bottles. The day before I only drank two bottles. Today I've only at 30 ounces so far.  In other words I think it's more important to listen to your body than to say drink 64 ounces, 24 ounces or whatever a day. How much you exercise, what you eat and your size probably have a lot to do with how much you should be drinking. I don't think you can make a blanket statement that six 8 ounce glasses is good for everyone. Same goes for 8 ounces.

For me, my nut says I need to get in 64oz of water and other beverages a day.  Of course, it should be a little more depending on how much I'm exercising. Now when I had a kidney stone (OUCH) and went to a urologist he also said if you drink 64oz of water daily and include lemon that you won't have problems with stones.  Soooo, for me 64oz is the magical number.

If that were true, I'd should have drowned by now.. I drink about a gallon a day no lie, that's not counting all the other non carbonated beverages I drink. For me though, when I don't drink enough it only takes a day for it to show. Slight burning when tinkling and urine stinks (yes TMI, but we're all adults).. there are other things too but I won't go into detail. Plus you need water to help flush protein out, radicals, and other crud. -Bud

I have those same things when I stop drinking as much. I  always get scared I have a UTI or something but as soon as I start getting in my norm it goes away.  After that only coffee and asparagus affect the odor of my urine.  :)

Ya know, i hear arguments for lots of water and against it.  Hard telling.  It is true that all liquids do count - even coffee - no matter what is said about caffeine dehydrating,  the water is still there. Fruits and veggies also have a high water count. I know for some meds, too much can be not good - it washes out electrolytes.  I just feel better when I have about 32-50 ounces a day of pure water. In the summer i drink more - it gets very hot around here! I have a half liter bottle on my desk, and most work days drink 1.5 of those, plus juice/milk.coffee n the morning most days.   I do "pretty good" about consuming high water veggies and foods (soups, etc).  I have one diet pepsi most days.
