Scale Opinion

For me when I am not on plan, I need to get on the scale.  If I avoid it, I'm just trying to hide from reality.  If I get on that scale and see a gain, even if it's only water it tends to help get me back on track and back to reality.   If I'm doing well on my eating, it's O.K. to stay off the scale for a while since it does tend to mess with my mood and sometimes my progress.

I tried to hide from the scale in the past and look where it got me.  I keep mine pretty close.  I can gain weight very easily.  Before I would go six freakin months and avoid the scale at all costs.  Unless I had to go the doctor or something, my ass was no where near a scale.

I don't wait that long anymore and it does help. I get back on my game plan  before it gets any further out of control.

When I am off track I hate facing the scale I do not want to face reality but eventually I talk myself into it so I make myself look at what I have done and try to fix it...because I dont want to weigh 276 again. I never want to see that number again!  But when I am in control and losing..I tend to step on the scale more often because I become obsessed with the weight loss...Which I am gonna try and just do a weekly weigh in...maybe eh. Maybe twice a week...I just cant help myself lol. Now I imagine this first week...by next Wed. I should have a pretty hefty loss since it is mostly water..I will be excited but I wont expect the same the following week. Which you know Christmas is Tuesday....Usually I gorge myself like on Thanksgiving...which I think I will not do this time...I have a tool that will help me say no. :) But anyways....yes I am more obsessed with the scale when I am losing other then not in control.

me, too, Brenda!  i have to reckon with the scale and get more number conscious. It has taken me a million years to accept that number is higher than my doc would like (who is Philipino, btw, and weighs 100# dripping wet, so we don't exactly see eye to eye) I do not dare discount it! Been there, too, and it kicked me in the teeth.

What I've been trying to do is just accept that if I put in the proper behavior, that the scale will move accordingly and to avoid it moving the wrong way, I don't give up my program.  It's part of the reason my trainer has wanted me to back away from the scale.  If you rely on it to keep you good, it's far better to rely on yourself and the power of choice.  A lesson I'm still learning.  I weigh myself less frequently, but avoiding the compulsion is hard....

If getting on the scale helps to get me back on track, then that is what works for me and it is what I shall continue to do.  My motto is, whatever works for you, then go for it.  Brenda

I'm exactly the same way.  I've been dreading getting on the scale this past week since I've messed up so  bad.  Today suppose to be my weigh in but I don't think I can face it today.  Plus I won't have no car so it works out for me. :)  But I did fess up and weigh myself this morning finally.  I had too, other wise I would of kept on munching on cookies.  I've gained of course, but I knew I did.  But I did get on the scale, and will again tomorrow. :)

As for it affecting your moods, I'm the same way there also.  You need to look at the scale to keep yourself accountable, but if it is any higher than you expect, it's like total depression all the sudden.  I hate that.

Hol, When I started my journey, I was in Get Honest mode.  Honest about anything and everything, including my weight.  It stings, but you need to know what you're dealing with.  So, now you k now your starting again point.  Let it go. Remember, for every problem there's a solution. Don't let the fact that a problem exists overwhelm you.  Search for your solution and apply it.  Then, simply, the problem over time will be dealt with.

The way I see it is that if you're in check and your eating and exercise plan is on track, you don't feel the need to weigh cuz you know that your weight is going down.   BUT..... If you're NOT doing exactly right in your eating/exercise then it's best to look at the scale to see what really is going on with your body.  If the numbers go up, it may scare the bejeezees out of you to get back with the program! That's my philosophy...and I'm sticking with it! Bren

Hi Bren yeah, totally agree. Every day weigh ins may be overkill, however I know a handful of thin peeps who do just that, and swear by it.  If they are up that day, they cool it until they see a number they like better. Who can argue with what works?  And to me, so WHAT if I thow a tantrum over what the mean ole scale says - boo-flippin hoooo. It does not then become a reason to get all depressed, all bent out of shape, off my stoopid program cuz I am mad - wow, that is for 3 year olds, not a grown person learning how to re-do some things.  It's only a number, folks.
