it prevents the absoption of fat and produces yucky side effects if you overindulge in fat. its suposed to be a reinforcement/learning thing. you learn that eating fatty things leads to problems, so you are less likely to eat fatty things in the future. there is nothing really magical about it. you do absorb fewer calories since that fat carries some calories with it. but if your problem is sugar and carbs, it won't do anything for you.  like anything else, its a tool that can help you in your journey. you are right though that you will still need to work out and eat better. i have used it on and off (as both xenical and alli). i think it helped me to not gain weight when in situations where i didn't have control over how food is prepared (eating out, living at a boarding school, family events).  if you are going to buy it, compare prices. online costco is much cheaper than say the corner CVS.

All pills are hype.  Oh, they'll do what they're intended--otherwise couldn't get FDA approval as a pharmaceutical (supplements not Alli don't have to do that). But no pill will help you lose real weight, and blocking fat is not ideal.  Your body needs healthy fats for your skin, hair, and weight loss.  Fat doesn't make you fat.  It does have calories which you need to consider, but that's it.  Fat is not the enemy. Besides, why expect a pharmaceutical to do the work for you?  If you study pharma, you'll find these pills a waste of money and a fearful thing.

Taking something like that is totally in your ball park.  It's totally up to you if you want to try some kind of diet aid.  I was considering it also for a while.  I did my little bit of research on it.  One thing that I didn't care for is that if you take it, alot of people have to stay by the bathroom.   This might sound sort of gross, but it can cause orange stains in your underwear.  Sorry, but something you might want to consider if choosing it.  I've read some people love it, some don't.  Like Andy said, it works with you against fat that you eat.   So you will pretty much know if you eat something bad then you for sure better be close to a bathroom.  I also heard some people just take it when they are eating bad for the day.  To me that's just a cop out, that's why I chose not to take it.  I've tried so many of these things in the past.  It might work for a while, but it's just a quick fix.  Although I have to say..sometimes quick fixes, or jump starts are a good thing.  It gets you motivated to work harder.  Just make sure if you use it, you know you probably won't be taking them forever.  So some time or another your going to have to adjust how you eat.
