my suggestion is to research all the options and pick which one feels right for you. and then start researching surgeons. make sure you pick someone you can trust and that will give you the care after the surgery you need as well. in the meantime, try and make whatever healthy changes you can in your lifestyle. you may find out you CAN do it without surgery.

You will choose what you think is best for you. My opinion, however, is that gastric bypass is unnecessary for most people except perhaps the Super Obese with hundreds of pounds to lose and no concept of control. But I will share with you what I have learned over the years.  "Gaining it all back" is probably due to the method with which you lost it.  Most people who employ means of severe restriction (either with a tool such as WLS or pills or with diet) end up gaining it back because they taught their metabolism to work on less so that when they ate normally (and I don't mean bad habits--I mean normal calories) they gain it back, and quite quickly because the body can't handle it, not necessarily because they fell off the wagon.  Sometimes that wagon is the wrong thing to hitch yourself to.

I know how it feels to regain, I have with every major diet I undertook.  That stopped when I stopped dieting and just ate healthy and exercised. My approach was to employ the guidance of a trainer who taught me the right approach to exercise.  I was always an avid exerciser, but had no clue to intensity levels and workouts that would give me the maximum return on my investment of time.  Through trial and error of food choices, we decided on eliminating starches.  The benefit of that approach to eating is that you're getting sufficient protein (~1g per desired body weight), the protein prevents hunger, cravings and keeps you satiated, and you can eat the appropriate number of calories without severe restriction.  The research I've been doing is showing that this is an effective plan for most bodies, so if you're finding that you "can't stick to a diet", I'd highly recommend this.  You will find you can stick to this, and see results. Lastly, I'd suggest, don't give up.  Have patience.  1-2 lbs a week is a long journey, depending on your goals, but it's the rate you should be going.  Ignore the diet industry and media and adjust your expectations. I'm sure you will find a way to be successful.  I just can't recommend WLS.  The thing about surgeries that so many avoid talking about is what it does to your body and metabolism.  If you don't have a sluggish metabolism to begin with, you will be creating one as a result of the starvation.  The result will be making weight loss a constant struggle. All I can say is that for me, my choice has resulted in--sanity in regard to the jourey and consistency in regard to the changes necessary...something traditional means never gave me for 30 years of trying....

My opinion, however, is that gastric bypass is unnecessary for most people except perhaps the Super Obese with hundreds of pounds to lose and no concept of control. 1) How do you get to be the arbiter of "necessity"? 2) I lost almost 70 pounds in what seems about the time you've lost your 22. I have a little more control than you give me credit for: not possible without it. It's inflammatory statements like this that make people miss your messages: you're tremendously insulting. Any good you might be doing is cloaked in a thick membrane of rudeness.

Hi Rhonda, I have to agree with Dolphin, research it until you can not research at all. You can only do whats right for you if it's to have surgery or just diet and exercise. You do what you feel is right. I am sorry to hear about your conditions I imagine thru the journey you will go thru, everything will get better :)  Christa

Hey Rhonda!

You don't say how overweight you are or how old, but my general answer to WLS or not is bascially this:  If a person is pushing 40 and 100+ pounds overwieght - or has cormorbids, by all means, look into WLS.   Statistically, the chances of you losing it and keeping it off are less than 5% without surgery. 25% with WLS.  Of course, BIG caveats to consider:  if you have zero control with food and hate to exercise, you will not keep it off.  With or without wls, if you have never had a regular exercise program or made wise choices with food (low levels of fast food/desserts, lots of fruits & veg, lean meats, whole grains, low fat dairy) - you had best get that under control before you seriously consider wls.  Best of luck - hope to see you around.
