I see some holding tight to deprivation as if it's the way.  It's a way, but not healthy.  I may not make friends by spouting truth, but I'd rather speak the truth and offer helpful information than coddle unhealthy attitudes and choices.

"I see some holding tight to deprivation as if it's the way." I'm really confused... do you mean deprivation in like dieting? I'm not sure what you're referring to. I think we ALL feel deprived now and then, due to making better choices and resisting temptations. But I'm unsure what you mean?  Can you clarify?  I know I  FEEL deprived at times, but I don't *think*  I'm deprived, because I have made that choice to resist :) ????

I mean in terms of calories.  I see many gleefully sharing what they eat and it's too little for long-standing weight loss and good health. A normal intake for a woman will be about 1800-2000 calories.  If you have to eat say 1200 to hold your goal weight, you lost it the wrong way and tricked your metabolism into thinking it needs less to stay stable.  The process I'm applying will prevent that, as well as weight regain when you eat normally as your body demands.  This is so critical....

Anyway, I agree deprivation is also a choice in terms of our mindset.  I'm off starches, but I'm not deprived.  I'm constantly full and satiated.  My food choices (protein, fat, and fiber) fill me physically and purposefully prevent cravings.  On Thanksgiving I enjoyed starches, but feel no guilt, regret, or wish I could eat differently.  I am freed emotionally because my body is satisfied and my mind is too because healthy choices leave healthy feelings. BTW, I wanted to add a response to another post.  My whine the other day is normal, sure--it is a long road.  Get over it, I did.  It was hormonally induced and as quickly out of mind.

My own personal thoughts... I think when we are under a Drs. supervision (as many of us are/have been in our WL journey/s) and they have given us the information on what we personally need in a WL plan... I think this is the right way to go. Because we are not all made up the same way. Some may have a harder time working proteins through their bodies... some may have a harder time with starches or whatever else. Your metabolism may run faster than your neighbors etc.  I believe the FDA's food pyramid was made from many years of studies/facts- it is built on those facts- for the "normal" (in terms of medical conditions) person.  Our bodies need "X amount" in each category.   We don't have to eat a huge amount of any one thing- but we do need the nutrients these foods carry. When a program/plan WORKS for someone... it is very easy to think THAT is the BEST way. That is human nature. If a trainer/Dr. gives you the information- and you try it... and it WORKS.... then it is the RIGHT way. But that is because the plan works FOR YOU. That is because you have FAITH in his/her teachings because it has clearly worked for YOU.  I.e., I have had great success in the 3.5 months I've been on WW... there have been times where I just felt like telling others- THIS IS THE WAY. Because IT WORKS. There are THOUSANDS of people who have had their lives changed in a HUGE way- because they followed WW and worked hard to get to where they are.  But WW is NOT for everyone. It is SURE the way for ME (I'm just very thankful I FOUND it before it was to late!)   But I am not so naive to think WW is for everyone. OR, that all their choices of WL are unhealthy or wrong. That would say that MANY doctors/facts/studies etc., are just plain  out of whack- and WRONG. But clearly, that is just not true. At this time, I'm not under a Drs. watchful eye- but I have been many times over the years. So I know what he would expect me to do for my own health. When he returns in month- he'll give me any pointers I might need :) "I am freed emotionally because my body is satisfied and my mind is too because healthy choices leave healthy feelings." IMHO, this is because you BELIEVE and have put your faith in the person/s you are working with. And in gaining THEIR trust- this has given the belief/faith/trust YOU needed within YOURSELF to make this life change WORK.  Religion can much the same- there are MANY out there who feel their faith is the RIGHT faith. If you feel any different- well, you'll find yourself in a very unfriendly position come your demise! And they believe this- with everything they have! There is nothing that will change this in their hearts- it is THEIR fact.  I also have in-laws that are recovering alcoholics & belong to AAA. Their way is the *ONLY* way.  There are many examples out there... it is human nature.  It has worked for them- so it is THE WAY EVERYONE should fix their problems :)  It's like: "It's MY WAY.... or the HIGHWAY!" Life - people - cir****tances - yadda yadda yadda ......  REALITY.... just aint like that ;)

Did you know that the FDA's Nutritional Guidelines are influenced by the grain industry? Go a century back and starches were not a big part of our diet AND we were thinner.

FWIW.

I am not on a soapbox and this is not because this has worked for me.  I base my belief on a lot more research than that.  This is not about faith and trust in my trainer--which I have given him.  It's about the information.  Plain and simple.

BTW, GPs aren't usually well educated in weight loss and their "advice" often mirrors the latest fad, not nutritional science, unfortunately. A doctor never helped me lose weight....

WERE we thinner, really? In the days before grains, umm, doctors did not keep records. And people did not go to doctors - they rarely lived past age 40. My aunts and mom's friends had doctors in the 1950's prescribe speed - black beauties alla time for obesity. Darn sure worked, too.

In fact, a Black Beauty 'scrip would fit all of your wish list...no hunger, guilt free choices off the plan, body changes, feeling goooooood.

I think I can safely say that I eat less than anyone here, and don't feel anything approximating deprivation. I feel I eat what is required to run my furnace, and I actually find that to be something of a relief.

You're way out of your depth, here.
