Someone just mentioned vitamins, now I got a question.
I was just reading a magazine and it mentioned if you crave sweets and carbs everyday, get fatigue 30-45 minutes after eating, and fighting the urge to nap in the afternoon that the answer was to take a daily supplement of 200mg of chromium. It says it "works with insulin to shuttle glucose to cells". If this is the case, then why doesn't doctors recommend this? I just looked in my vitamin and it has 120 mcg chromium in it. Lol, what's a mcg?? Is 1000 mcg a mg???!?! I'm confused.
Anyone ever take extra chromium in their diets? And if so, or has anyone heard if this actually works?!?!
My bariatric doc does prescribe chromium. I cannot see a gigantic difference in using it or not using. it - eating more protein alone has definitely curbed my urge for carbs. Plus, eating leafy greens has made a difference in my craving levels.
I would say the reason doctors don't prescribe it is because most medical docs only have about two classes worth of nutrition training. Which is exactly why if you want to lose, you should see a bariatric doctor. Most Primary Care Physicians (PCP's) deal with the effects of obesity, not how to prevent it or cure it.
My PCP has a personal interest in it and does watch for new medicines that help obesity. He has okayed several of his patients for wls, but not me. In general, he is of the old school - calories in, calories out. No help. But he did okay me to go see a bariatric doctor when I broke down in his office - he does not understand how hard I work at this. He checked my heart out first before I took the appetite suppressants. Chromium cannot hurt to try it, never know.
