I bought a package of those Boca Burgers last week and I really didn't expect to like them. Well I tried them last night and I actually thought they were pretty good. They have the South Beach symbol on them too which I like. I also looked at the Morning Star sausages. They have 80 calories for one patty so I passed on those. The turkey bacon I eat is only 20. I'm sure those taste better than the turkey bacon, but I can deal with the bacon. They cost a whole lot more than the bacon too. The same people that make the Boca burgers also make a chicken patty and so does Morning Star, have you ever tasted those? Just wondering if they were any good. They do have quite a few more carbs than the burgers. I think because it looks like they have some breading on them. I also eat the South Beach pizza about once a week. I looked at the Healthy Choice pizzas, but they have a lot more carbs than South Beach, so I passed on those too. I don't eat those processed too much, but sometimes they come in handy. Thanks for the tip. If you have any more, just yell it out. Brenda
I have eaten the chicken-free breaded patties, and yeah, they are edible, but as you say, if I recall the calories are kind of up there. Not much motivation to eat them unless you are off meat.
I love the morningstar farms sausage patties - one patty crumbled up with one poached egg is a very satisfying breakfast for only about 200 caloires! I also love to crumble one up into egg white products and steamed spinach - my favorite breakfast when i wake up starving (which is like never). The Boca crumbles are "okay" to extend beef in tacos, but i cannot quite hang replacing meat in like spaghetti or anything. The consistency is the problem - it gets kind of gummy.
I also like Tofu dogs...but do read labels. They can be higher in fat than most of would like. I prefer them lightly pan fried rather than mike'd. Also try some of the soy-based lunch meats - they have come a long way. Try them on dark rye with mustard.
I could be a sandwich FREAK - love them...
Dark rye is better than wheat as far as glycemic index, too. I think we buy Orowheat brand. But, if you have a deli, lots of times they make their own dark rye bread or pumpernickel (may be the same darn thing, they look the same).
Usually the slices are either small or very thin, so perfect for us who are watching grain intake. The Orowheat brand has large but thin slices, so one piece does ya. Anymore, DH and I freeze our loaves, we hardly eat bread, so we thaw what we need as we want it.
