I'm beginning the process of trying to have weight loss surgery. What do I say to people who say weight loss surgery is the "easy" way out. jrosean

I find "Eat **** and die" is both succinct and informative.

By the time you actually are approved for surgery, you will find the words.  Shari's choice, while certainly charming, may be a little stark.  I'd tell them that my research has shown otherwise. Major surgery involving the re-route of a major organ, last time I checked, is not for sissies. I am not sure I could ever do it, in fact. I got rejected. AND...it all comes back to...eat right and exercise in the end. Still not so easy.

keep researching! the words will come. Plus, consider not telling everyone. This is a fairly persoanl choice.

People say a lot of rude and incendiary crap. I don't feel under any obligation to engage the uneducated.

I think when people state that it is the "easy way out", there are few that would disagree, even those who had WLS. Now of course it's all relative.  Easy in this case meaning that your choices are made for you, overeating is just physically not an option and you don't have to work as hard at stopping the consumption of enormous amounts of food all on your own. Easy is clearly not the horrid dumping, the medical issues that can come up as a result of GBS, and of course the entire process which for some can be amazingly easy, for others like a trip through hell. However, as Neecee has noted, in the end it all comes down to you.  Does the "easy" part allow you to ingrain those good habits regarding portion control into your head?  One can only hope.  The behavior modification needed for the "easy" way out is pretty much physically guaranteed.

In the end this is not a magic bullet, just a leg up on the process.

If you had half a handle on what my last three months have been like, I doubt you'd agree it's easy. I am losing no faster than I was pre-op. I spend over 45 minutes a day just planning meals and I'm taking 17supplements. I've had excrutiating post op pain from multiple sources. I had none of this pre-op. I've been there. I've dieted, and I've had surgery. Dieting is considerably easier to do, just harder to maintain...and since I am no where near a maintenance mindset, it's just not easy. Maybe it is for the throngs of people who half-ass it-- those who count nothing, eat what they like, what have you-- but not me.

Easy my ass.  I was losing weight faster when I was doing Atkin's, then I am with this friggin' band in me.  And without the band, I could do things like eat and drink at the same time.  Can't do that anymore.  Far from easy, I can tell you that much.

I don't consider WLS an "easy" way out!  I had insurance that would have paid for it, and I chickened out for several reasons.  You can have complications or even die from this surgery.  If you get through it without complications, the regime you have to go through afterwards is what I consider very extreme!  Eating pureed foods, etc.  And the "dumping syndrome" if you eat anything with too much sugar or fat I found very undesirable to consider, as well.  I didn't want to have to worry about being sick afterwards.  There is no easy way out.  Either with or without WLS, you have to make a major lifestyle change.  I'd rather do it less drastically than having surgery. I have never had a WLS but I have gotten the same remarks with a c-section apposed to regular birth! (have had both) I say- "you get your GUT cut open and then tell ME how EASY it is!"  (especially after they SNEEZE that first time!!!) Yuck... screw them! There is *nothing* "EASY" about ANY of this WL stuff :(     Good luck on your journey!

You will find the words. Or you can ignore them.  Perhaps they are secretly jealous and wish they could do the same.   I know people will think that way but screw them.  Who cares what they think I sort of thought that way, but it was really my own fear of surgery speaking.  My primary care physican is against it. But recently I had to see a cardiologist that was very pro wls and he said to me I would be more afraid of being obese than of wls.  To have a cardiologist refer me and speak so highly spoke and abundance to me.
