I guess you're right.  I really should have specified that I have panic attacks.  There is a difference.  Since I haven't had a formal education in psychology I tend to lump my issues all into one bag.

I never thought about it like that...  I guess everything can be considered anxiety when you put it like that.  I don't have panic attacks. I never feel completely out of control, just more or less irritated by situations around me, hence the obligation and impending doom issues.  I had always associated anxiety disorder with severe panic attacks and if someone didn't have them, then they didn't have a disorder. I guess that's a little naive.. perhaps I was just using it as an excuse to say I don't have issues.  My wife has panic attacks and anxiety disorder. She's on meds for it and refusing to go see a psych for it.  Perhaps for similar reasons..Who knows..  Anyways, I always welcome your 'psychological things'!  You're the only person I know who understand all this.. I hate to break it to Lucinda Bassett and the Midwest Center but they have it all wrong.... I've listened to her tapes by the way. Useless...would you like a copy?

I think it's human nature to have issues to some degree.  I never understood the term "dysfunctional family" .  Every family I know is like that.  Sounds normal to me.  I think some people just maybe aren't as introspective and/or don't have bothersome symptoms that interfere with life so they just go about their business.  Of course, as I am not a "professional", that is my opinion.  LOL and I'm full of those!

I found challenging myself to make small changes really helped me.  It will never happen over night so progress in the right direction is the best thing you can do for yourself.  Fast food is a real problem for me so I challenged myself to not get it for one day and then I tried another day, etc.  I haven't had fast food since August 23rd and not b/c it's difficult any more but b/c I don't really want to get hooked on it again.  I also started with walking.  I couldn't do very much in the beginning but I challenged myself to do as much as I could and it got easier over time.  It's taken time but it's not about perfection.  Right now I am challenging myself to lay off the soda.  I drink Caffeine Free Diet Coke but it isn't really that good for me so I'm trying to cut down.  I drink water all day and have a glass of soda (or two) with dinner.  To me, that's much better than the 6 or 8 glasses of soda I was drinking. The other thing that helps me is to keep track of everything that I'm doing, eating and feeling.  I go back and forth between a few sites but for tracking food I like thedailyplate.com.  There are lots of sites out there though like sparkpeople.com, extrapounds.com, fitday.com. You'll get there.  It takes time and there's lots of support here to help you.

You are doing EXACTLY what you need to be doing to make sure that the changes are for life rather than for now. Congratulations!  Dieting

Vicky -

Hi and welcome.

You make the change 1 meal at a time.  1 day at a a time.  You decide with all your will that for the next hour you will not be an overeater.... and then repeat, hourly.

If you fail - do not wallow.  Just start again... if you have to do it one mouthful at a time then so be it! Eventually the hours spent as a person who eats well will outnumber the hours spent as an overeater.  You CAN do this.  starting with your next bite.

I so know what you mean.  I admit to be addicted to food.  Just read an interesting article...  I found this to be helpful.  Years ago after suffering from debilitating migraines and doing the shots every day... I wanted to DIE...I researched and found a drug that w/ off label use CURED migraines.  This anti seizure medication, topirimate, aka Topimax changed the physiology of the brain. A side effect was weight loss. So, I took all the studies and info to my doc and was given the med.  Years later the FDA approved the drug for migraine therapy.  I lost weight, too.  It made me not want to eat... cured my addiction to food.   The article this past week suggests the drug is helpful for alcoholics... addiction to alcohol. So, if any of you suffer from migraines and want to loose weight.... well, this may help you. {I went down to 136lbs and moved to a 3rd world country where the staple was rice and noodles and could not get the meds... I gained ALL the weight back}

vicky...you are among friends here...please stick around. Emotional eating can be reckoned with. It is a matter of understanding that food is not your enemy. Abusing food is your enemy.  You know which foods to choose more often Just think about how you can manage all the better quality foods into each day, then make a plan to do so.  WHEN, not IF you eat the not -so-good choices, stand up, get back on the horse. We all fall off, it is simply a matter or moving forward.
