A while back I made a post asking how many of us sit at a desk at our jobs.  I was wondering how many of us smoke.  They say people who smoke are thinner.  I wonder to what degree, if any, this is true.  They say it increases your heart rate and makes the food not taste as good.  It would probably help when your bored.  I know a couple of my friends when I was a teenager were chunky and they starting smoking and their weight went down.   I personally do not smoke and would never start regardless.  Brenda

Was a chunky teen who started smoking.... ended up an obese adult who smoked. Quit 8 years ago this November...  I dont think it affected my weight at any point.
What I've eaten is here for the world to see
336.1 (8-1-07)/319.0 (12-28-07)/200 (goal for 12-31-08)/160 (goal)
Next mini goal is 290 by 1-31-08

I don't smoke, however (and unfortunately), my two aunts do.  They aren't super skinny and one has emphazema and could be on oxygen within the year if she doesn't stop and the other actually had a heart attack as a result.  My Aunt's Cardiologist even told her after major testing that the only reason she had her heart attack was due to her smoking.  Thank the Lord that she's been smoke free for three weeks.

I have never smoked... both my parents did and they were not thin at all. My dad quit after 50 years and on his death certificate it says "Cause of death: emphysema- 50 years of smoking". That cured me from EVER starting (the end was freakin UGLY:( My sister use to smoke and she was heavy. Now I don't know- maybe they would have been heavier had they NOT smoked? I CAN say, that before my dad died (or was even sick) I DID think of starting just to loose weight... cause I had always heard it helps you from eating as much.  I'm glad I never did- I'd rather be fat than to go through what my dad endured the last 10 days of his life! Interesting question!

Don't smoke, never did.  One of two vices I never acquired -- I don't gamble either.  Anything else is fair game.

Well, to be honest, I was always kinda chunky.  Wore size 14-16 in high school (would give anything to wear that size again).  Anyway, I started smoking at age 16, I still wore size 16s, but maintained my weight.  Well, in college, I began smoking pot (and was still on cigarettes).  Gained like 15 pounds in 1 month cuz I had the munchies all the time.  Lost weight several times since.  BTW..quit the pot also. At age 35 wore a size 14 wedding dress...weighed around 160.  Quit smoking cigs and have been over 200 lbs. ever since.  I think smoking passes the time, as does food.  If I was hungry, I'd light up.  It gave me something to do instead of eat. When I have get togethers with my girlfriends, I eat sunflower seeds while some of them smoke cigs. Wish I could be content with just sitting there having fun......but NOOOOOOOOOOO, I have to eat SOMETHING! That's my story. Bren

My sister and I are 20 months apart.. she's smoked since she was 12 or 13. My mom and brother also smoked. I have been known to smoke "socially"... that would be once or twice a year after I had a substancial buzz from a few too many drinks. I have always been thinner (ok.. less fat) than my sister. My mom has had major weight fluctuations associated with health problems... I don't think smoking has ever helped her keep the weight off. I think that the stinky breath, wrinkles, and yellow teeth strongly outweigh any potential weight loss!!

Not any more, but i sure nuf did for many years (age 15 to ~33 years old).  I was up to 3 packs a day!   Felt like pure crap, too. Probably smelled like it too. I would have a hangover from the **** more than the party-substance of the day.  It took me like 4 years to realy quit. As for weight control, I think smoking did its part - fer sure I smoked when probably i would eat. My MO for diet plans in the day was:  starve all day, smoking cigarrettes, then at night...binga-rama!  But the truth was, i was slowly putting on weight as I aged anyway, even while smoking. I would have only ended up a fat smoker. Talk about a gun to my head...with my familial patterns of stroke, heart disease, may as well lay on the train tracks. In the five years after i quit, i gained about 50#.  I cannot blame cessation of smoking completely on that - those were the divorce years, so i was also under incredible stress and working 12-14 hours a day.
