Metformin experiences ?
Hi everyone-I am usually on the VSG forum and have been waiting on approval for surgery and was denied. Went back to my PCP for more follow up and she has now put me on Metformin thinking I may have Insulin resistance? Any one on this Med? has it help you lose weight? Have had a little side effects(like going to the bathroom alot). Thanks for you input.

METFORMIN/GLUCOPHAGE WILL CAUSE YOU TO GAIN WEIGHT, THATS ONE OF THE DRAWBACKS OF DIABETES MEDICATION. ALMOST ALL OF THEM DO, AS YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT BYETTA, IT WORKS WONDERS AT CONTROLLING THE CURVE OF SURGAR LEVELS, AND APPETITE, ACCABOSE IS AN ANTI CARB ABSORBER MUCH LIKE XENICAL, WORK WELL ALSO. FOR CONTROLLING DIABETES. I TAKE ALL THREE ALMOST PERFECT A1C WHILE I WAIT FOR MY DS THAT IS A SURGICAL OPTION I ALSO SUGGEST CHECKING OUT
I have been on Metaformin for a few months now and seem to have no problems with it. I have not gained any weight while on it actually have lost about 20lbs. Mainly done through diet and exercise. When I first started on Metaformin I was a little nauseated, and ran to the bathroom for a few days. But after my body adjusted to it I don't experience any side effects. My sugar is pretty well controlled now.
A lot of diabetes medications cause weight gain. Metaformin, Glucophage, Januvia, and Byettta are suppose to be ones that don't. Byetta is rather expensive if your insurance will not cover it, it works well for some, while other have difficulty tolerating it. Byetta is a shot you take with meals. I was never able to tolerate it past the 5 mcg dosage.
Wish you the best.

Robin, I am on this drug and my doc says it does not cause weight gain. In fact he says
some people lose weight. I already posted about how wonderful I was doing with both
metformin and byetta. I think just about everyone goes to the bathroom alot although it
doesn't happen to me. It is a good drug for insulin resistance. But like I said I would ask
doc about byetta along with the metformin. I lost over 100 pounds in a year not dieting.

I was on Met for about a year, and must say I had no problems with weight gain. In fact, i lost about 50 lbs with that and diet changes. In fact, i wonder where the idea that it makes one gain weight came from. I am not diabetic, but PCOS and insulin resistant. The idea is that it helps your insulin production (sorry not up on all the science in depth), so that you DONT have the excess in your system which is what actually causes weight gain.
For me, Met actually turned me off from carbs, they made me feel kind of nauseous and intensified the diarrhea that sometimes comes with it. That side effect was really the only unpleasant one and it lessens after a while (few weeks/month or so) . If you have acne, sometimes it will help clear that up as your insulin and hormone levels get regulated.
hope that helps. I think it is a great thing, after you get used to the side effects.

Hello. :) Congratz on the Metformin. I'm sure it will help you.
I've been on and off Metformin since 2002. I have had great success with it. I was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome (with insulin resistance--> prediabetes) in 2002 when I was trying to get pregnant. My doctor put me on Metformin, and I became an expert on minimising and managing the side effects. For tips, pm me! I have a ton.
Short story-- after 3 months, I had lost 25 lbs and had a period on my own (hadn't been having them before). I felt so much better overall, too. It really helps not to have those insulin spikes interfering with your life.
I have had 2 pregnancies since then, and during the times I was off Metformin (I usually fell off the wagon after the pregnancy...) I gained weight back...
Now I'm back on it, and a low calorie diet, and I'm doing great losing weight.
I was on Metformin for about 7 months and finally had to get off of it because it didn't agree with me. I had rectal bleeding, nausea and vomiting, not to mention terrible cramping. I didn't gain or lose any weight from it. Everybody's different, many people take it with no problems.
Good luck to you.

Hi RMD64,
I am now taking the drug Metformin, and this medicine is not agreeing with me at all. My doctor also said that I have insulin resistance. I have not loss any weight, and now I am a little concern. I decided to go back to my doctor and ask her to do more test. So I hope and pray that there is another drug that can help with this weight loss and insulin resistance.
Sincerely,

Thank you everyone for your advice. I did have the stomach upset, and had to go to the bathroom alot, that seems to be dieing down a bit. I don't feel as bloutted so I many have lost some water weight. I go back to the Doctor on Sept 24th. So, I do hope I have lost some weight... that would be great. I am drinking lots of water, because I hear the drug makes you thirsty, and I am. Watching what I eat, but I do think the carbs I am eating is what makes my stomach upset. Anyway you all are great, thanks again for the input. I hope to have the VSG done next year.
