Putting oneself first - because I'm worth it

I do know what you mean.. and I apologize for making light of it.  But yanno when ya get something stuck in your head.. and you have to laugh?  Um.. I was there.  Your post inspired some serious thought about the very thing I've been wrestling with for a very long time.  I think I'm finally learning that in order to regain my own sense of self, I do need to put myself first now..  and not the rare "going for a ped" anymore.  I find that all this "doing for everyone else" over the years has taken quite a toll on my self esteem.. believing that my needs were inconsequential as compared to not only those of my own family unit, but also those of my extended family, church family, employees.. anyone and everyone but.. me.  Hence, I have treated myself badly and with such disregard.  Alrighty then.. 35 years of that is just about enough (I think the shrink is really earning that check)! Your idea was plainly stated and I'm sure many women have experienced this on some level.. and yes..  it's time you do something nice JUST for you!!

Exactly! The other day I came home with 4 bottles of this chipotle mango sauce that I love on my chicken breast.  It was on sale for $2.50... and it is usually over $5. My husband asked why I stocked up so much... why not just buy one now and get another later, which is what I would normally do... the truth of the matter is, I stocked up so that I would not put myself last later. I deserve good food that is good for me.   If I had NOT made that purchase, when I ran out I probably would have gone without for a very long time because it is expensive and money is tight.  I would have felt that it was more important to spend the extra money on my son or husband somehow....  and I would have eaten my chicken bare or with a sauce that high higer calories or sodium... Instead, I took the chance and spent the money while it was there and I spent it on ME!  Yes, it appears selfish to some... but only because they are used to me waiting at the back of the line for scraps. No more  I am going to continue to put myself first when it is reasonable and folks are going to have to get used to it.

Believe me when I tell you: Bert would LOVE to be lathered in perfumed lotion, under limited cir****tances.  And I...would like to wax his ass, just for sport.

i just ordered 7 vintage VHS tapes of programming from MTV from 1981-1983. I'm not allowed to watch 'em until I hit 100 pounds gone-- and I'm gonna be DYIN'!

(Sorry, just not too crazy about perfumed lotion rewards...my nieces talked me into acrylic nails about 3 years ago and I still have to have the damn things since they wreck your nailbeds, so now I avoid girly rewards. Well--plus I buy myself that stuff anyway. ::::insert chagrinned expression::::)

Don't presume too much, mamacita. I am helping to raise 8 children that aren't mine (just threw down $400 on school clothes!), I put someone else's kid through college, paid two years of guitar lessons for yet another one, and I donate about 10% of my salary annually to causes other than myself/my family as a general rule. Oh yes, and I nub my widdle kittycat and buy her much toona. I'm a philanthropic smart-ass, see.

I guess the question is.... do you do that to your own detriment?  Do you go without things you NEED so that others can have things they WANT? See that is the issue to me (for me?)  I go without things I need (and most things I want) so that other's can have their wants met.  That just isnt right.

I'm gonna answer that with a simple question: You know a lot of millionaire public school Art Teachers? ;) If it ain't right, fix it, mama! "Give 'til it hurts" is simply lousy advice!

LOL no.  never met a millionare school teacher. and yes - I am working on fixing it.  I guess that is where this post really comes from, my own realization of how much I allow myself to be taken advantage of.
