I've thought about this for awhile... but Shari... I was reading one of your posts and I wanted to hear what ya'll think! (I'm a Californian... no drawl here but it seemed to fit!)

My hair is long... the longest it's ever been. In the back it hits my bra strap.. despite layering it quite a bit recently. I have chopped my hair a few times in my life. The most dramatic was for the police academy four and a half years ago. It was very GI Janish of me... liberating I'd have to say! Since starting this new healthy life style with my DH I've been seriously debating doing it again. My hair is kind of my crutch... the really only "attractive" thing about me. I think if I cut it.. it would force me to focus on the rest of me. Opinions??? I have had long hair since I've known my DH... I honestly think he would s*#t himself if I cut it off!

Oh, and Shari... I started using Fitday yesterday. I am right in there with the carb/protein/fat ratio that you suggested. Can't thank you enough for your words o'wisdom!

I think you're onto something (Bert will argue.)  My hair is naturally very heavy and extremely thick and red...all good things, generally speaking. Here's why I cut it off: 1) This is My Year of Monastic Living. Hair is for vanity. Hair is to attract boyz. Hair is becoming and lovely-- but a lot of work. I found that not wanting to get my hair wet and all screwed up again was my #1 reason for avoiding the pool-- and the pool is my workout mainstay. Cutting off my hair means I am free to swim with impunity, and I do. My haor was so thick that I literally ore it up every day, anyway. I was the scrunchie queen of South Jersey. 2) My BF actually likes short hair. You can't tell what I actually look like on my profile since I only post my crackhead "before" pics, but I'm a mod, and nothing looks more mod to me than short, razor cut dark hair. 3) I think long hair on big women is sometimes like waving a red flag to divert the attention of a bull-- look at my head, please! But I finally came to the place where I don't give a fig what people are looking at most of the time. 4) Despite the thickness,  I expect mine to fall out-- in big clumps, as is typical in post RNYers a few months out. I'd rather clean short clumps outta my drain than big heaping wads, and shorter hair tends to fill in bald spots better. Growing my hair back out is in my LONG term plans, but for now, it's staying this way. My sanity and focus are more important to me than the opinions of tha boyz.

since my hair is ratty, always was always will be, I have no opinion on hair and fat-ness.  I can equate it to wearing make-up and being fat, i think. I have long contended that many fatchicks wear waaaay too much make up, me included for the same reason that you keep longish hair.To divert attention, or so we reason. Truth is, being a decent weight, having clear glowing skin and eyes that only regular exercise can give are some top beauty tips.  Even Rapunzel's hair could not cover the fact that one is fat. Phyllis Diller's makeup could not conceal it either.  I also have a pet peeve that most women nearing and certainly over age 40 look well, like Cryptkeeper with more than shoulder length hair. Kind of macabre. Certainly, not ALL women...some types look great, natural beauties and such. This is my opinion, of course. Men tend to love long hair no matter what, so there's that. I have heard it said that short hair is more trouble than long hair, and vice versa, too, so ya got me.  I have to get mine colored and cut every four weeks, so that is a major pain.  My choice, of course, to do so.  I say do what you want..it's your hair!

I never felt a need to divert attention from my fat-- I was just lucky to be born with shiny red hair, and felt obligated to grow it out because it was "special" somehow.  I wear a good amount of makeup-- to enhance my features, not to hide myself.

See my profile--- there's at least one pic of me with long hair, and I'm not so Crypty! ;)

I likewise resent it that many women do not even try to wear make up...like Christa...i am a make up ***** from hell.  i rarely go out ever with zero on.  I mean, i know it is not one whit of my business who wears long hair or make up or whatever..just sayin. Yes, thick red hair would be a novelty, fer real. You also do not look anywhere NEAR 40, so there is a bonus.  But you gotta feel me on this one...picture a head full of long beautiful blond hair even on a slender person from the back view on the city bus..she turns around...she is clearly 60 if she's a day...freakin MACABRE...sucked up face, wrinkles, like Skeletor. I'm sorry...it's not right.

OMG Neecee, The part about the lady on the bus? You must be talkin about the lady up in Weed.  She must be dead by now, but when we lived there, every friggin time I would forget that the lovely, slender, tight skirted, LONG haired lady was WAY old when I drove past her!  Ya, LONG hair at a certain age, just ages one! As for short hair? I love it. So easy and fun to take care of.  I just got mine cut in a "Victoria Beckham" bob-ish style, but alot shorter than Vic's.  It takes me 2 min. to blow dry, bru**** in place, and go....Sometimes when I'm in the growing it out mood, I think, short hair will make me LOOK fat..Errrr, Iam fat...lol...

HAHAHA.  Oh hair is the subject....mmm I like hair. Cosmetology. It's your hair do what you feel. Fell like chopping it...go for it. I like my hair...short or longer thats why I keep it medium...shoulder length....if I want it long I throw in my lovely extensions.. :) I may be a hair ***** like i am a make up *****but I still get my hair wet when I go swimming really it isnt a big deal because After I get out i can fix it up again.  :) Vanity or not...your hair do as you please. Oh and Neecee totally agree....women of older ages with long luscious hair...or more less usually at a certain age the hair gets stringy and yucky if it is long...better off short. :)

I know I had my hair long when I was in my twenties and into my mid-thirties.  When I got thin in my mid-thirties, I realized I was tired of long hair, and cut it.  When I got fat again, I realized I'd kept the long hair because I somehow thought it "covered" the fact that I was fat.  I looked at pictures of myself fat, in long hair, and I came to one conclusion.  The long hair didn't cover my fat, and really didn't do much for me, after all.  I had deluded myself that somehow I was "sexier" with long hair, and I really wasn't.   Now, I like my hair, short, blonde, and permed.  Permed, cause I like the body, and blonde, cause it covers the gray, which I feel makes me look old before my time.  Now I'm in my mid-50s.
