I found out today that my husband's niece had a baby boy.  So,,,, that makes me a Great Aunt, and him a Great Uncle.   So is the baby my daughters' 2nd cousin, or cousin once removed, or what?? ( I vote for "what"!)

Congrats on the new addition to the family! My family is quite large, with many nieces and nephews and many having children of their own.  I enjoy having the babies (some now college age) call me by the proper relationship name of Grand Aunt so when the kids are all together yelling "Auntie Lori", I can always pick the younger generation out of the voices when I hear "Grand Aunt"!  LOL  I love 'em all so very much!! So, you and your husband are Grand Aunt and Grand Uncle to this new baby, and your daughter is his first cousin once removed.  Wikipedia has a chart that appears accurate, but we all know about Wikipedia. If you do a google search with "How is my niece's baby related to me? and to my son?" you may come up with the Ask MetaFilter response. God Bless!

Oh My! I googled  "relationship terms",  who knew there where so many variations on the theme!! I have a headache.  It looks like cousin once removed is the appropriate term.  "Once removed" refers to the next generation. To me, 2nd cousin sounds much more appealing than being "once removed"! There you have it!

CONGRATULATIONS!! In my area most would call you the babies "Great Aunt". The baby would be your daughters 2nd. cousin.   I don't think there is a right or wrong on this one but I do think the way it's stated comes much from the area you are from.  Kind of like the way some words are pronounced differently- for example, we have a state ferry (no freeways/bridges to connect to anywhere) that is  called the "LeConte"   (pronounced Le Kontee). It is named after a glacier up here. Most new-comers pronounce it: "Le Kont" .... and they feel so strongly about their pronunciation- they will argue like heck with us to try and talk us into believing their way is the "right way".  Doesn't matter that we are FROM here, have lived here 4EVER and learned this in our Alaskan History classes etc. LOL Pronunciations are just different across the map :) Congrats again!  I have eleven great nieces/nephews now but only one lives close enough to spend time with :(

edited because I think I explained it to mom wrong the first time - and I did!!! My mother is an avid geneologist.  She has a room we call the morgue.  The walls are covered with old family photos of people long dead and he many file cabinets are full of their history on paper.  Now that she is retired she is often found at the LDS temple library...

So I asked her, and this is her reply... Your niece's daughter is your grandniece, and you, of course are her great aunt. because your niece is your childs cousin, the niece's daughter is your childs cousin once removed. In a few southern states however, she would be marriage material...LOL
