Your tastes DO change

Kind of following up on my convo with Kriz on this board the other day about what food's like after RNY. I do enjoy a couple of things. Kashi whole grain crackers with Laughing Cow light cheese are tasty and they slide down really well. You'd think crackers would be hell, but they actually are no trouble at all. Ditto for baked tortilla chips. Puddings and yogurt slide through great. Mushy vegetables are no problem either. SF popsicles are nice for a trea****er's great, especially flavored, but hard to drink if it's cold. Gives you chest-freeze. Meat is a pain in the backside. It's the center of the post-op diet since life is all about protein first and whatever else you can cram down your gullet later. Pureed anything is okay. Actually chewing and swallowing? Turkey is actually easier than chicken-- no idea why. Deli meat (low fat) goes down okay. Ground turkey is okay, but a ground turkey patty is not--- too dense. When it's too dense, you know because it gets stuck. Even if you chew the crap outta things, they kind of pile up in your esophagus. It's acutely painful, but if you're a good chewer and stay calm, it also (so far) passes in just a bit. When it happens though, it's like a flaming pencil through your heart. I'm tryin' to avoid THAT, so I still blend a lot of meat. I could happily eat cheese and crackers all day long. But I don't. Yet. I stick to a half-serving-- a max of 7 crackers (CheezIt sized) and all should be well in the world. I think I would love mashed potatoes, but can't see what they'd gain me so I haven't gone there. I'm going away this weekend-- and may try eating out. That should be ....something!

Hi Shari, I don't post much but I lurk waaay too much!  I just wanted to say that it is so nice to hear the whole truth about the surgery experience.  I know there is no such thing as a "typical" experience because each person's cir****tances are so different but it is nice to hear both sides of the journey.  Sometimes I get so tired of everyone only posting the sunshine and light crap.  It is nice to hear it from a "real" person especially one with your sense of humor and smart-ass attitude.  I love your posts!

I wish I knew how to quote just what I want to quote.... yikes.. I'll figure it out eventually.. Shari.... what about sweet potatoes?  Can you have those?  In my bodybuilding days sweet potatoes were a staple.. very nutritious and delicious .. just the way God made 'em... and they can be mashed very smooth.  Lotsa vitamin C in those....
