Diet Soft Drinks
That's a good phrase for them.
Things I know:
- Your body reacts to the sweet thinking it's going to get a dose of sugar thus dumping insulin into your veins to counter it. Except.. the sugar's not there. That can't be good... Could possibly lead to diabetes.
- The caffeine in the soda can deplete calcium in your bones though it is a very insignificant amount as long as you're getting calcium elsewhere. See more about caffeine controversy on the web.
- All soda irritates your stomach because of the phosphoric acid in it. Your body naturally fights off this irritation by dumping calcium into your stomach. Kinda like popping a tums. The problem is most people who drink diet soda don't drink anything but that. No water, no milk, no juices.. They don't eat fruit, veggies, whole grains, or anything that's good for them. In other words, they get virtually NO calcium intake. So when they drink the soda and the body dumps the calcium..where does it come from?? The bones of course. Since the calcium isn't replaced.. over time.. the bones are depleted.. They call that osteoporosis.
- In addition to the calcium problem the phosphoric acid can interfere with digestion and absoprtion of nutrients that your body needs.
- Artificular sweeteners in diet soda are considered carcinogens.
My opinion... It's horrible stuff when used on a regular basis. Drinking a soda a week or something is probably not going to hurt but by all means make it a treat and not your primary source of water intake. There is a long laundry list of complications around drinking diet soda, caffeine and artificular sweeteners. It's really up to the individual to do the due diligence and make a personal decision on the matter. For me, I drink them on occasion. I always drink at least 60 ounces of water a day and most days much more.

If he's drinking lots of milk and eats good healthy stuff then he's probalby okay drinking the soda but like I said 'most' people don't do that so chances are he's slowly killing his bones and doesn't even realize it.
I'm having a 12 oz diet dr. pepper at this moment. I've been drinking on it for about 20 minutes now and it's not even half gone. Had a craving.. now I don't really want it. I so much prefer water now.
